I'm going to need to replace the clutch assy on the GF's YM2200 and have a question about the procedure. Most of the folks I've spoken with say to separate the tractor into two halves to access the clutch. From what I can see, it almost looks easier to remove the engine. Any words of wisdom you folks can share? I've had years of experience with almost everything with an engine and wheels, but I've never tackled a little red tractor! :D Thanks! BTW, I'm working out of a fully stocked shop, so tools aren't the issue.

Removing the engine is the same as splitting the machine in half. The engine makes up the front component of the tractor frame. Removing the fuel lines, hydraulic lines, steering linkage and some electrical wiring doesn't take long. Then remove the bellhousing bolts while supporting each half, and roll it apart. I did my Ford 1700 on uneven dirt all by myself, except for pushing the halves back together, in about 8 hours. Mine was a train wreck of a job, and I think I could do a 2wd, with a helper, fairly easily in about half of that time if I had all the parts.

If you have done clutches before, it is straightforward. Just be very sure to get the throttle linkage, fuel and hydraulic lines, and anything else that runs from one half of the tractor through the other. Take pictures as you go!

Points well taken, thanks. I'd overlooked the fact that everything I'd worked on (go-carts to top fuelers) actually had a frame! I've done quite a few clutches, but I'm still going to photo document everything from start to finish. I can't imagine how I ever got by without a digital camera to keep track of things. Once it's apart, I'll see just what the problem is before ordering replacements. From what I've heard, the Yanmars from that era changed parts configurations almost from year to year. Thanks again!

Haven't done it on my yanmar. I replaced clutch on a to20 I had. Blocked up the rear half & rolled the front half away from the rear. Not a bad job but, it does take some time.

Actually YM2200, 2700 and anything else with exhaust on the left side and the intake coming through a hole in the hood stand alone in a unique sub-category of Yanmars, mostly separate from the other YM's that share a lot of parts. But its clutch components should be generic and readily available.

1Danny (see his Home Page listed in his profile) is the only place with a boneyard of YM2200's for parts that I know of. Hoye probably, too, but I haven't seen Aaron mention that.

One tip I've read on splitting the tractor: balancing the front and back halves so they don't tip over is obvious. But you also need to wedge the front half solid to the front axle so it won't tip side to side as you separate it from the back.

Please document it with those photos on here as well. I've never seen a tractor split, so that would be a great learning experience watching you go through the paces.

Well, it's apart, with little or no damage to yours truly! :D It really wasn't bad at all, taking a couple of hours to methodically work my way through the separation. Once apart, there was no doubt it was the clutch, specifically the disk. I've never seen this before (probably because I work on race cars), but the disk actually looked to be intact, only the rivets were gone and the thing was in 3 pieces. The friction material actually looked to be in decent shape and intact on both sides of the well rusted hub. Interesting. I'm now searching for a clutch disk, pressure plate, TO bearing and (possibly) a pilot bushing if anyone has any super-secret sources to point me in the direction of. Thanks again for the assistance!

BTW, I just checked and it's a 8.5" disk with a 13-spline hub.

Thanks. I also found that Yesterday's Tractors and Tractor Joe have the required parts. Any feedback on these folks?
