Law Enforcement

I believe the idea behind police is a fairly good one, and I also believe an individual police person(not all of course) is a good thing. Now comes the sad part, the entity that becomes "law enforcement" is much like that of our government, corrupt. Honorable job that loses value because of greed and where is the next $$$$$$$$'s comming from.

Having seen my son's paychecks and having handed out quite a few myself, I don't accept the $$$$$$$$$$ motivation; we will just have to disagree on that. My son is no longer in law enforcement.

I think you made the OP's point.

Law enforcement is a lot like any other profession; you get the good, the bad and the ugly. I think by and large, they do a good job of keeping out the Wyatt Earps and retain the good public servant. I have been greatly relieved a time or two when they were there to help when I needed it, and greatly pizzed when some bubba in a speed trap gave me a $90 ticket. I think we as citizens need to exert as much political influence as we can so that our police force reflects the intellect, empathy and public spirit that we need in the Thin Blue Line. God Bless 'em and I wish them well.

I think I was still a recruit in the police academy when I heard of a fellow who got permission to ride observation with police officers in New York so he could write a book. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of the book or the author, but he supposedly said he wondered why intelligent young men in good physical condition would take the low paying job of police officer. His conclusion was that it was because they had a ringside seat to the greatest show on earth. I could identify with that. As an old country boy, I'd been to a couple of county fairs and rodeos, even to the state fair, but I just couldn't believe the things that went on in the big city. For quite some time, I looked forward to going to work each day, and hated to see quitting time come.

Agreed, I wish more citizens would get involved in such matters if possible.

We must also remember, they only enforce the laws we impose on ourselves through our elected representatives.

The median salary for a police officer in Oklahoma City is about $48,000 per year. Starting salary in the range of $32k; upper limit in the 65K range. Not bad, really. I suspect the HW patrol is a bit more.

Dallas now starts at about $41,600 annually or $3,474 a month, and goes up to $64k plus, but when I started in 1964, it was $370 a month.

That is good, most Sheriff's Deputies in my area make less than $30k per year, some about $25k with some small municipalities less than $20k. St. Louis and Kansas City are in the mid $40k range, but my ex-son in law is a Sgt. with STLPD and his insurance is pretty bad. Of course Missouri state employees are the lowest in the nation. I don't see these salaries as being high enough to support the claim it's all about the money; almost everyone in my family in the private sector makes far more.
