What Bird said in Post #16 is exactly what I was thinking.

That is good, most Sheriff's Deputies in my area make less than $30k per year, some about $25k with some small municipalities less than $20k. St. Louis and Kansas City are in the mid $40k range, but my ex-son in law is a Sgt. with STLPD and his insurance is pretty bad. Of course Missouri state employees are the lowest in the nation. I don't see these salaries as being high enough to support the claim it's all about the money; almost everyone in my family in the private sector makes far more.

The last time I heard, starting deputies in our county were making 25K-30K. I think the PD in the county seat was about the same. As a result retention is a problem because young officers often want more experience and money so they will go to the bigger city PDs. But even there it ain't about the money. Even starting in the low-mid 30K is not a bunch of money to be working 12 hour rotating day/night shifts wearing a polyester uniform that makes one sweat worse than a sweat suit. Not to mention duty belt and vest. Teachers complain about pay but LEO's and those crazy Fire Fighters are really underpaid. The family of a Fire Fighter or LEO is always worried at some level is their loved one will make it home at the end of a shift. I don't know how much money it takes to compensate for what these professions do on a daily basis but I know the starting pay ain't it.

Some PD's allow citizen ride alongs with officers, which I highly recommend, especially at night and on the weekends. If people REALLY knew what went on in their area they would be absolutely shocked. If they saw the revolving door of the CRIMINAL Justice system we might get some needed changes.

Dan

I don't like cops. I have never in my life had an experience with a LEO that they didn't treat me with disrespect or were condescending towards me.

The thin blue line is something else. These parts cops are above the law,DWI, fighting and spousal abuse are swept under the table, except in the most egrariuos cases.

There was an article in a local paper a year or so ago where they interviewed a deputy on an upcoming DWI roadblock. This arrogant SOB actually said that he,"Loved the look of trepidation that appeared on a motorists face upon approaching a roadblock."

Danger, Yes cops do get killed in the line of duty, but LEO does not even make the top ten list of dangerous occupations.

No I wll not change my tune when the cops roll up. In almost 60 years of living I have never had occaision to use their services and I highly doubt that I ever will.

And how many law enforcement officers have you met to form that opinion? Of course there are both good and bad; we even sent some to the state prison during my career, but the majority of the ones I've known (which is well up into the thousands) were good, honest, caring people.

What is your occupation? Are there some bad people in that occupation? I'd bet a lot of money that there are some bad ones, so would it be logical for me to assume you're bad, too?

Bzzz. Wrong. The 10 Most Dangerous Jobs in America

LEOs are in the top ten. I wish they were not. The placement in the most dangerous list changes from year to year but I have seen LEO's listed very year I can remember and usually much higher in the list.

I stand corrected, I just looked at a report and they were listed as #10
As to how many LEO's I have interacted with, I would say hundreds if not thousands. I have been a volunteer fire fighter for 18 years and for several years I was Haz-Mat liason at a military base. My opinion stands. Most LEO's are arrogant and condescending towards the civilian population!

Never met the people you are describing wearing a Police Uniform. Maybe you should consider changing your recreational activities to one that promotes a more friendly environment.

Your opinion is very badly mistaken. "Some", but far from "Most" are arrogant and condescending, but just as you are badly mistaken if you're talking about LEOs overall, I don't think I've met any officers from your immediate area. So I can't comment on the officers there, although I'd bet money you're wrong there, too. However, you certainly live in a beautiful area, or at least it was when I was there in 1993.

Pitch1; I understand your frustration. Long story short, wife and I were invited out one night to a pub that had a band. The Pub was a known local cop hang out. I'm usually quiet when we're out so I just hung back listening to these punks(young officers) talking smack. They were bragging how funny it was to pull old folks over and treat them like they were drug dealers. Even bragged how they would tear their cars apart then leave them sitting on the side of the road  One even bragged about how he made an old lady cry about her car inspection  I still would like to believe that most cops are doing the right thing(up hold justice) but sometimes it is hard. I hate it when an officer uses the badge to make his/her britches look bigger, and yes it does happen a lot in this area.

WOW !! Really !?!?

I think I can safely say that most cops extend the "blue line" well beyond just cops...ie, Dr, Nurse, FIREFIGHTER, EMS, and military...I've met people in all professions that are disrespectful or arrogant, it is my opinion the profession doesn't matter as much as the person...

I sincerely hope you never need the services of law enforcement...and I pray that if you do call them it's for something minor...

As far as the "disrespect or were condesending towards me" part of your post, maybe the attitude/vibe you're giving off toward them is part of the problem...

Yes, I'm a cop, a father, brother, son, hunter, fisherman, farmer, and consider myself a pretty good guy...I will go out of my way to help a person regardless of their profession, status, walk of life, or whatever...and yes, I did find your comments to be in bad taste...if you don't like cops, fine, you don't like cops, however a tractor forum is not the place to vent...try Anne Landers !

Finally, regardless of your dislike of cops, I would still help you in a time of need if I could, don't care if you like me or not, if you needed help and you were in my jurisdiction I would give it without reservation...as would all of my fellow LEOs...just the way we roll.

Respectfully,

Rich
