pattern change on bx25 backhoe

Nice explanation! Is there any history, that you know of, of how the two came to be? I won't even venture a guess.......too used to ISO now after 3 different backhoes. ISO seems to make more sense to me but since that is all I have used I may not see/feel the benefit of the other. At least now we have 2 joysticks and not 4 separate handles in both variations! Hose change would only require swapping 2 for 2.

I really don't know the history... only what I've read here on TBN.

thanks for the help guys. as far as the history on the controls its my understanding that the manufacturers were just trying to get an industry standard setup. the excavator pattern is kinda the standard now, not sure why the backhoe's still run a different pattern. i first learned to run a hoe on case 4 stick controls and i steel feel that is the best setup, i'd feel way more comfortable jumping ditches and stuff on 4 stick but those are outdated i guess. i only played around a little so far with the kubota but i'm impressed, powerful for its size. going to have fun with it.

well i was able to change the pattern, only took about an hour to switch hoses. its more like a 10 minute job but it is so tight to work on it took a little longer but its a pretty simple switch. kubota has all the hoses color coded, i thought that was a nice feature. they do a good job building these machines.

Thanks for the update! Glad it worked out for you! Don't invite me over and have me run your machine, I'll wreck something for sure!!!

That's very interesting. ISO is an international standard, so this sounds like just another United States versus Europe standards conflict, e.g. SAE versus metric. A friend of mine can't fly my RC planes when he visits from the UK, because the sticks on the transmitter are backwards from what he's used to!

I would wonder that the controls might not be as smooth. Kubota controls on backhoes are very smooth compared to many of the different make machines available. I might wonder that that was done by valve sizes and possibly restrictors.

The local rental place always refers to the patterns as Deere vs Cat if I recall correctly (they ask how you want the mini-ex set up when you reserve it or before you leave)

controls are still smooth, i checked with the kubota service guy and he said everything is the same as far as hoses.

Every back hoe I have operated has the ISO connections. Is the SAE connections on the larger machines something that started here in the USA? :confused3:

The Cat Dealer from whom I bought my mini-ex referred to the patterns as Deere and ISO, not Deere and Cat, but what you said makes sense. Cat has a valve to switch to either pattern on all their minis - not sure about their small excavators an.d larger. Makes sense to have the pattern changer on any excavator to prevent a Tim Taylor like car crushing accident because a new operator was used to the other pattern. My Cat mini was designed in Japan and built in the UK for use outside Asia.
