What is a Fair Mark Up on Repair Parts?

The fact that they gave a marketing presentation to "sell" you on their Chinese production speaks volumes. Volumes that I don't like and will not purchase if any choice is given.

Unless you can find one made with SKF or Timken bearings you WILL be buying cheap Chinese stuff, brand name or not !!!

Apparently you haven't learned that Timken has 6 production facilities in mainland China and SKF has factories there as well.

I think there might be a difference in a SKF/Timken bearing made in their facility in China, (or Inda, Vietnam, wherever) vice a HF or some such company who buys just the lowest cost Chinese supplier.

Curious as to why SKF and Timken brand names make a difference as both have a large presence in China and produce bearings in China for sale around the world. I have not visited their Chinese factories but have had their reps give a presentation stating why I should not be concerned when particular bearing sizes I was using were being relocated to Chinese factories.
Timken and SKF have some quality control, so they qualify as expensive Chinese stuff...

If you find a business that you really feel is making way too much money then you should invest in that business. It must be a good investment, right?

It's not that the chinese CAN'T make a high quality product it's just that they can't do it unless Q & A is standing there looking over their shoulder to ensure they are. This is a FACT of chinese manufacturing.

The big companies who do make bearings in china do have extra quality control on their products to make sure they meet their higher standards. And for this you'll pay more.

Actually China does produce high quality stuff. But they also sell knock off copy stuff that was made as cheaply as possible.

But on topic....

Most shops will charge 100% mark up. Remember they have to spend time ID'ing the part, ordering, stocking etc. If you don't like the markup, do what I did and learn to turn wrenches. When ever I need a new tool to do a job, I get it. The cost of me doing it AND buying the tool is at worst the same as paying someone else to do it. Only I get the job done and have a tool too.

That is why one asks for an estimate of what the repair costs. If you sign the work order in most cases it states the repair will not exceed 10 percent of the total estimated. This is why I have a hoist and a tool box..... for myself and relatives that can't afford taking their vehicle to a professional shop. Buy quality replacement parts and do computer searches. Someone has completed the repair and may have tips on installation.
