I failed to add that the chimney has a stainless steel liner in it that requires nothing more than seasonal cleaning (which I do myself). Replacing it would cost a few hundred dollars, and I would not expect to have to do this more than once every 7-10 years. The rest of the pointing work and such for the chimney would be handled at a cost of a few hundred dollars every 3-5 years.

All-in-all, I'm saving WAY more money that it costs me to operate, and the payback is very quick from the initial investment.

If efficiency was always the driving force behind energy use, we wouldn't be driving cars powered by gasoline engines.

Efficiency of solar panels matters too. The more efficient they are the cheaper they will be because of the bulk of the cost is the cost of the silicon crystal they are made of. At the end all what matters is bang for the buck. How much energy it produces relative to the cost of the system.
The solar system is very upfront loaded investment but if you finance it and the loan payment is about the same as you energy bill ( due to currently very favorable interest rates) it in effect costs you nothing. And you are not hostage to energy cost increase.

I'm not disagreeing with that. You will save money, but most people don't look at a solar system as a way to save money. The goal or motivation is not the same. If I can accomplish my goal at no or low cost, that is a whole different concept. Five years ago, I could not afford to accomplish my goal, the cost was too high.

Waiting for solar technology with rapid payback plus savings may be waiting for something that will never happen. Sometimes, it is better to take what is there to take and be happy.

Efficiency is efficiency, regardless of the context. Your comment was that efficiency doesn't matter. My comment supports that. If we chose all of our energy systems based on efficiency, we would not be using the internal combustion engine to power our cars. And, exactly to your point, the reason we do is "bang for the buck". We could have much more efficient motors in our cars, but they would cost much more. And / or they would cost much more to operate. The gas engine gained its popularity by being reasonably inexpensive to build and reasonably inexpensive to operate. When solar reaches a point where you get out a lot of energy without putting in a ton of money, it will gain in popularity.

I disagree that the financed cost of a solar system being the same as your current energy bill is a wash... If I currently spend $200/month (on average, over the course of a year) on electricity, I can not install a solar system for that much money that will completely eliminate my energy bill. And, even if I could, it wouldn't have any "growth" potential in it for any future needs that may increase my current bill. So, what's the point?

Further, why would I invest all that money to break even every month only to have to quite possibly "start all over again" in 15-20 years?

I understand the potential for green energy, renewable energy source, reduced dependance on foreign oil by cutting demand from the grid, etc....

But, the end question is the same - why would I invest my money into equipment that I must own, operate, and maintain unless there is a significant cost savings to me? See my earlier comments about installing the wood-burning insert... I avoid buying 1,050 gallons of heating oil each winter by burning wood. To achieve that fuel reduction, I spend $600 for wood and "$100" in miscellaneous costs for fuels and stuff. On top of that, I figure in about $100-$150 per year in maintenance costs for the chimney and such. Even with my operating costs, my investment for my stove is completely paid off in under two years and then I'm banking at least $2,500 every year.

Why do I need to replace my system in 20 years? I expect a hit in efficiency, but they are not just going to quit in 20 years. My panels are warrantied efficiency 90%/12years, 80%/25years. It's not like they just drop to 0%.

Having been in hi-tech industry for the last 28 years, I imagine in 18 years when my panels and inverter turn 20, that technology will have jumped ahead. I'm not confidant that solar panel wafer development will follow Moore's Law, but I expect they will improve significantly.

Still, it is not like at 20 years I have to start over.

VERY front-loaded at that... And, what will the cost be to replace the system in 20 to 25 years when the subsidies are gone?

Meburdick, the way I understood Dave1949's response a few posts ago, was he sees it as a cause. If I understood that correctly, than arguing about payback is less relevant ...

I give money to charitable organizations, in a large % basis, compared to my income. I do that, because I believe in the "causes"... There is no financial payback to me, whatsoever. On a spreadsheet level, donating to charity is financially stupid to do.

Dave1949 believes he is helping the planet. I think he sees it as a form of charity, however, he thinks he may potentially recoup all of his "donation" and possibly even make/save money over time.

Dave1949, if I'm misinterpreting what u said, please correct me.

You can look at it another way too. People buy big trucks or Porsche as a daily drivers. Nobody questions sanity of such purchase. Show me any 50k car that cost nothing to operate and keep its value.

Your savings could fund PV is also a point worth considering.

No, you can't run a light bulb from a wood stove, and it isn't a good comparison of ways to implement solar. The point I was making was that there are other areas where we have to invest money up front to get savings, and the savings comes MUCH faster.

I burn about 6 cord of wood per year. I buy it in log length for roughly $100 / cord. I have a $800 wood splitter, a $300 chain saw, and will spend about $50/year in fuel for the saw, splitter, and tractor (to move the wood on pallets) for cutting, splitting, and stacking. In total, my investment for the year in wood is somewhere in the $700 range.

By way of comparison, a cord of wood replaces an average of 175 gallons of oil (lots of factors have to be considered to get a fully accurate number: burner efficiency, type of wood, water content, etc - but 175 is a good "working number"). That totals out to 1050 gallons of oil. At $3.50/gallon (cheap during heating season in the northeast), that's $3,675 in oil. Subtract out the $700 I spend for the wood, and you're just shy of $3,000 every heating season.

Put better, I save somewhere around 80% by heating primarily with wood. That's a more useful number because the cost of wood increases in relation to the cost of oil. If oil were to double, you could expect the cost of wood to double. I would still save 80% although the dollar amount would increase to almost $6,000. :shocked:
That is comparing apples to apple pie. A cord of wood goes from $150 to $300.

In order to FAIRLY compare wood heat versus most other methods one should include human interaction such as labor required to get the fuel to change into heat and the "going" cost of the fuel, not what one individual pays for it.

I've got 3 houses and 4 methods of heating.

1. When I want to heat with the natural gas heater I just ensure the pipeline is still working and turn the thermostat.
2. When I want to heat with the electric heater I ensure the electricity is still working and turn the thermostat.
3. When I want to heat with the LPG gas heater I call the delivery man and turn the thermostat.
4. When I want to heat with the woodstove or fireplace I have to ensure the wood is nearby, carry it in and feed the unit.

SWMBO wanted a pellet heater at one time. Until I reminded her that if she was alone she'd be the one carrying the pellets.

My costs for fuels 1 thru 3 is the market rate, fuel 4, wood, is "FREE" to me. I make it as a byproduct of my small sawmill and cleaning up the lots. But even "FREE" requires a bunch of effort.

Since you ((meburdick) cut, split, transport and stack a cord of wood for about $10 a cord (6 cords with an out of pocket price of $100, plus $50 in fuel) and then gets it inside, you must have a greatly more efficient way of doing it than I have found.

I've enough trees on my land I could keep you (meburdick) busy forever at $10/cord.

A better comparison would be to price your 6 cords of wood at market rate. Connecticut Firewood Service sells it for $230/cord in Connecticut. Thus your 6 cords OUTSIDE would be worth $1380, and that's still not in the burner. So add in your labor to get it to the insert.

I agree there is a large savings, but to compare logs to oil is just not fair.

If I were not on the north side of a hill with high trees behind me owned by my neighbor, I'd have solar for sure. I don't worry about the payback so much. I'd like having it around, monitoring it, installing it, and whole deal. I am considering moving just to get a flatter place, with more land, and one more conducive to such projects.

My all electric home power bill only costs me around $65/month in the summer, and ~$120 in the winter, but I do burn some wood. And I continue to try to drive those numbers down. First best money for me would still be more insulation...but not nearly as fun as solar and I do like fun as much as the next guy. And life just keeps getting shorter.

I can see how you would enjoy analyzing a solar system. Probably have to add 4 panels just to run all the sensors and monitors :laughing:

Seriously though, energy savings through insulation and high-efficiency are the low hanging fruit that should come first. I think you are on the right track. If more people looked at their particular situation with the goal of reducing energy consumption, the cumulative effect would be huge.
