Buying Advice L, M, or MX series? Can you offer guidance?

The dealer I spoke to yesterday worked up an estimate for me with a grill guard along with an FEL. I hadn't planned on a guard, though my BX has one. One thing I had planned on adding later were "suitcase" weights up front. Anybody know if the bracket for the weights can be added along with the grill guard?

The grill guard is part of the loader package, or at least it was with the L3800.

Suitcase weights can be used with the guard, but not when the loader in on.
And you wouldn't want them on with the loader anyway.

The grill guard came as a package with my FEL, not a seperate order item. The guard has come in handy a couple times, moving rip rap, a couple stones got loose, and moving a box blade around with my bucket hooks, twisted around on me. Not sure why you need weights on the front? I have an old 6' heavy bush hog, makes it a little light in the front, but not enough to add weights. Philip.

Well, I'm not sure I do need weights. I'd planned on removing the FEL when bushhogging, and attaching the weights at that point. My MF231 gets a bit light in the front end on hills. The front end tends to plow a bit while turning on hills. With either of the Kubotas I'm considering weighing less than the Massey, I'd imagined the weights being helpful.

It would not hurt to have a few weights on it if you take the loader off.

I'll have to give my dealer's estimate another look. I got quotes on an L4600 and an MX5100. I'd thought that the guard was extra, but probably didn't look closely enough. No, I certainly wouldn't need or want the weights on with the loader attached.

I was thinking I'd use those while brush hogging.

On that topic, do those of you who mow/brush hog a good bit leave your tractor in 2wd and shift into 4wd only when needed, or simply leave the tractor in 4wd all the time? I'm guessing (and my dealer told me) that the tractor will tend to "plow" less while turning than my Massey 231 does - provided the tractor in in 4wd.

Some dealers break everything down on the price other lump it all together. Usually a grill guard is included with the loader.

I mow with my L3800 in 2wd 90% of the time, only use 4wd when needed. I use a Land Pride 5' mower, loader always off and have no extra weight on the front. Steering is never a problem. I mow aprox 30 acres twice a year and several miles of logging roads.

My front end gets a little light with a 6' bush hog, but nothing I am uncomforable with. Steering is fine, no issues. But, I do not deal with hills here in central Indiana. Maybe the Kubota weighs more in the front than the Massy? Philip.

I find myself just leaving it in 4wd most of the time when bushhogging. But it all just depends on the job. If it pretty flat, I will shift into 2wd cause I ca used the brakes to steer MUCH quicker. But hilly at all, even slight hills or un-even terrain, I like 4wd. Ofcourse I am using a good bit lighter tractor than most of you coupled with a 1100lb bushhog requires I leave the loader on. So when I lower the bushhog, and most of its weight is being carried by the front skids and rear tailwheel, I have very little weight actually over the back tires. :confused2: So for me, it is default to mow in 4wd and if conditions permit, I "may" take it out of 4wd. You just have to find out what works best for your combination.
