have you taken the spool apart to look at the machines shaft? maybee surface rust from setting in 1 part?

Yea, that may do it too

I don't believe he has pulled the spool based on certain comments. I believe he only rotated the spool, and perhaps found some disparity in the machined surfaces.

The problem with a leaking spool, is that they generally don't make replacement spools as they are a precision fit.

He might be able to switch hoses to different work ports using another spool and at least keep the boom fully functional.

Maybe switch work ports with dipper circuit.

If this is a stacked valve, the stacks could be moved to maintained the normal BH pattern. You know, stack 3, shifted to stack 4. to maintain proper hand coordination.

Maybe a new stack for the boom.

yup.. could be a number of things. I too was thinking about a slight machining issue.. that or a surface rust imperfection.. something so that when it is moved or rotated a different surface is touching. hard to say without seeing it in pieces..

If the one stack needs replacing, now would be a good opportunity to add another spool stack for the thumb for the bucket, that you might want in the future.

I wonder if the spool can be turned 180 deg.? The N detent might have to come off to do it.

Depending on the amount of time that it takes for the boom to drop, it maybe concerted normal. The tolerances on these smaller machines are not as tight as they are on larger much more expensive equipment. If you contact the manufacturer they should have the drop rate deemed acceptable for each cylinder. Some manufacturers are more forth coming with these numbers than others.

He said within minutes the boom was on the ground with lever in neutral, and he had to constantly pull the lever to keep it up..

Yes, I could almost watch it creep when the spool was turned to the 9 and 3 o'clock position(in relation to the bolt attaching the linkage arm). When turned to 11 and 4 the boom does not creep.
When working the machine and digging it operates perfectly.
If the rain ever quits I'll be taking down a few trees and digging out some stumps on Saturday. This will be a true test on if the boom will move once the machine is moving around. I didn't run the BH much until after I had just put the valve assembly back in it and really didn't pay attention to how the spools were turned when I removed the linkage arms. I turned them to make it easier to get a wrench on the 1/2" bolt and nut.
