Did "Sandy" storm match expectations?

Rising Sun, MD here ... About 7" of rain so far- still raining. Strong winds last night, but all of our many trees OK. Lost power for about 7 hours- standby generator took care of that. I'm sure that this was nothing for the hurricane "veterans" but we aren't quite so 'lucky' to have experienced many of these!

Yup -- it didnt match my expectations in my area - but I am somewhat shocked at NE coast area. NYC sure have a big clean up on their hands. On the news they said the ground zero is flooded.

OTOH, they canceled schools in my area but this morning it's all nice and calm with power, light drizzle rain.:confused3: SO I am here with the kids on a nice calm day...
Maybe Ill make em rake the leaves in my tractor  today.

It was the collision of the hurricane with the cold front that was way overhyped. Hurricane damage was immense but rather routine for a force 1 hurricane.

Hi lite for me was a news clip of a reporter on the beach talkingabout the the high wind, water, damage and pointing to a stretch of what I call "snow fence" down. About fell out of my chair laughing.

If the forecasters indicate that xxxx is going to happen, the media has to say "more than" xxxx is going to happen. They have to make it news, bigger news than the other stations, etc. It was a big storm and there are millions without power, thoughts and prayers to those effected and safety for the utility workers trying to restore power. The media is happy to take the focus off the election and other current events right now.

While I am certain the folks on the coast as well as the path of land fall were hit hard, we were not.
Interesting note. Although we were inundated with storm warnings are dire predictions from environment Canada, the weather forecasts did not concur. Forecast for rain/ light rain is pretty much bang on. Winds We're strong and came from a bad angle last night, but were not exceptional in force.

Total hype for me and my house here in western Pennsylvania, just some rain and light wind. I could tell from the storm map forecasts on Sunday that it wasn't going to hit us, but yet the local weather experts kept hyping it. This morning the local news coverage had virtually nothing to say about the storm locally!

While the storm might not have impacted any one person's area, it's amazing that anyone would suggest that it was simply no big deal in general. I have friends in the NY Metro area who are telling me that their area was severly impacted. CNN headline "Unthinkable Devastation". NY & NJ officials who have been through numerous catastrophic events such as Hurricaine Andres in FL say they've never seen anything like it. Over two dozen deaths reported so far.

But I guess that's human nature. Hurricaine Irene was considered a "non event" to many downstae New Yorkers, while upstate where I am whole towns were wiped out and still have not even begun to recover. Out of sight, out of mind I guess...

If they couldn't see it from their houses, then it must not have been serious.

Looked like a nothing burger on TV to me, someone who has been through some real hurricanes here in Texas. My recommendation for NYC pick up the one piece of plywood in the street and your good to go, might take four hours to plan though and decide who's going to move it. Minor damages right on beach areas, nothing more. Barely brakes the "news" threshold for me.

It wasn't even a tropical hurricane, it came ashore as a sub tropical cyclone......
Sandy was not a hurricane, technical but true.

Is this guy for real?
