Lots of flooding here. I have over 30 tree's down, most torn out at the roots. Still more rain.

Seriously? You might want to try a different news channel.

Just the one fire was pretty bad and certainly "news" worthy - ~200 fire fighters in a six alarm fire that eventually destroyed 80-100 homes, fighting the fire in chest deep water trying to rescue people trapped in flooded burning buildings.

Geographically the biggest storm recorded. The lowest hurricane pressure recorded north of NC. Worse problems ever to hit the subway system in its 100+ years. Over 13,000 flights have been canceled. Record floods in the most populated city in the nation. They're already throwing around numbers in the tens of billions of dollars of damage, and its only been daylight for a few hours. 7+ million without power, estimates say power should be restored in 7-10 days. If you include other countries, the death toll is approaching 100.

You got that right. The other guy must have been watching the Disney channel. I'm about 40 minutes north of NYC, but I was very lucky compared to some of the destruction around me. My house is on top of a mountain so no flooding issues. I lost power from 8:30 pm until about 3 am, no big deal. I wish I could say the same for the rest of the city.

As I'm writing this, channel seven news said they found the body of a 13 yr old girl, under a fallen tree, on Staten Island. The mother, who I assume was with her, is in critical care. The father is still missing.

Its amazing how meaningless, what you thought were huge problems, now seem, after hearing such stories.

Hurricane Sandy transforms into a sub-tropical storm - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

I deal in the real world, a few tree limbs and power outage are not new. Because it happens in the NE doesn't make it bad. It was not the storm of the century as touted by media, it was a weak sub tropical storm.

HS

Do you get your English news from the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation)? Why would you quote an Australian news source for information regarding Sandy

We were lucky to be on the outer edge of the path the storm actually took. Some sustained winds around 20-25 mph, bands of rain are still coming through this evening. No damages, power blinked once last night. The southern tip of Maine and up the coast had worse. About 85,000 without power at the peak.

I hope those affected get back to normal soon. It's hard to imagine living in a 5-10 story apartment building with no power or heat, such as those in Lower Manhattan are facing for a couple days. Like the NY Gov. said, NYC isn't designed for that kind of storm surge, and Gov. Christie of NJ said the destruction along the shore is unbelievable compared to any past weather events. The last time the NYC area was hit with such a serious storm was 1938, and I believe that affected Long Island more than the city proper.

This storm is being compared to Andrew in 1992 and Katrina in 2005 in size (25ft waves on Lake Michigan?) and devastation/damage created. 15-20 billion in damage is the current estimate.

What we experienced here in Central PA was nothing and I am very thankful for that. Need to revise/improve my methods for emergency preparedness.

Ya, this was a monster in my mind. I went through a couple of smaller ones when I lived in Florida, this one will be mentioned for a few decades. I know we have many members in that region and I sure hope they are OK. Hard for them to update without power.

New numbers just came in. They are talking about 20 billion to cleanup and rebuild. This is insane.

I'm about 30 miles from phily

My 1/2 hour commute to work this morning took 1 1/2 hours

Lots of trees and wires down and back tracking to get there.
About 6" of rain the about is because the wind knocked it over and I put it back up and that is what was in it total.
I did notice that parallel roads had trees down in the same path I never noticed that before in a storm.

At home lights just blinked a couple times shingles laying in the yard looks like from the neighbor's houses.
The 2 town around work were out completely but work had power .
I'd say 2/3 of my ride home still didn't have power yet @5:00pm
