Did "Sandy" storm match expectations?

You know, you can say what you want, but this storm had the most densely populated region of our country in its bullseye. Nowhere along the Gulf Coast is there anywhere near the population density of the northeast. Besides, there's never been a hurricane that flooded the Houston, Texas subway system. We and those who live in the northeast can thank God that this wasn't a more forceful hurricane. The cost of this storm, extended power outages, and the lives lost all say that it was a devastating natural disaster. Comparing it to a Gulf coast hurricane is just counterproductive in my opinion. I wish the best for all those stranded and in harms way in this storm. I don't need to make comparisons to know that there are frightened and helpless people due to this storm. They have my complete sympathy and hope for the best.

Media as usual, out there referring to any piece of construction equipment they see as, "a bulldozer". And as usual, none of them are. :confused2:

Also home with kids due to school being cancelled (last night before 8PM). Power was out for about 3 minutes around midnight, couple of dead branches got broken off--but not much else. Having spent enough time in NYC--they really felt the brunt, cannot imagine the city being able to function for a while with the subway being down/flooded. Our little creek out back didn't even make it halfway up the bank!

It wasn't even a tropical hurricane, it came ashore as a sub tropical cyclone......
Sandy was not a hurricane, technical but true.

Yes, shows that mother nature can whip up one whale of a lot of damage without haveing to strain herself getting up a major hurricane. Just a bad combination of a weak hurricane hitting tides, etc at just the right time.

I deal in the real world, a few tree limbs and power outage are not new. Because it happens in the NE doesn't make it bad. It was not the storm of the century as touted by media, it was a weak sub tropical storm.

Looked like a nothing burger on TV to me, someone who has been through some real hurricanes here in Texas. My recommendation for NYC pick up the one piece of plywood in the street and your good to go, might take four hours to plan though and decide who's going to move it. Minor damages right on beach areas, nothing more. Barely brakes the "news" threshold for me.

Death toll now 39, preliminary damage estimates now $20 billion.

That puts it up there with some of the worst storms, in terms of damage.

It wasn't the intensity that was unprecedented, it was the size.

Keep in mind, it struck areas that are not used to getting storm surges like this, and several inches of rain at once. The infrastructure is not there to deal with any of it.
