PTO generator

I had Rural King call the vendor while I was in the store. They admitted to Rural King that they knew there was a problem with the PTO shaft and that they were working with the supplier to resolve the problem.

What part was damaged on your generator?

It was just the cover plate for the overflow plug on the gear housing. The factory plug was tapped so crooked it wouldn't seal and the threads that were cut were absolutely horrible. I welded a 1/2" plumbing fitting over it so now it works. Not a big deal but a person shouldn't have to modify parts from a new purchase. Furthermore, Rural King should have responded to my request(s) instead of just blowing me off and stating the issue is "closed" in their email replys even though they did nothing nor contacted me. What did they do for you regarding the stubby pto shaft?

Gentlemen-thank you very much for the helpful replies!Thankfully I'm not in need of emergency power like our eastern friends.I must admit I made an error in my original post.My well pump is on a 20 amp breaker.not a 15 amp as previously stated.Hopefully this will not effect your calculations too much.I'm reviewing Dark's thread and Rob-d , CrazyAl and Dex info as well. Please accept my apopogies.Thank you again!

I also have a 20 amp breaker for my pump. You can do the math to figure out the minimum size generator needed but I would factor in some extra. For the extra few bucks a 5000w or 6500w generator will cost you over a 3600 or 4200 it's not worth the savings.

Neil, Is Tiger no longer going to make pto generators or just no more 20k?

they are getting out of the PTO generator business. I bought out about the last 40-50 PTO generators they built, but they are done manufacturing. The company (Dynatech) is still in business and doing fine, they will continue to stand behind any warranty claims. They just where not finding the business profitable any longer.

Motor inrush current can be more than 6 times running current depending on the NEMA Locked Rotor Amp code usually listed on the nameplate of the motor. Here is a chart for reference and how to use it. NEMA CHART

That's locked rotor amps! What happens when you lock a rotor on a motor? You blow the breaker! It's not the same as starting amps.

Motor Calculations | NEC content from Electrical Construction and Maintenance (EC and M) Magazine

" Motor locked-rotor current. If the rotating part of the motor winding becomes jammed so it can稚 rotate, no counter-electromotive force will be produced in the motor winding. This results in a decrease in conductor impedance to the point that it痴 effectively a short circuit. What痴 the result? The motor operates at locked-rotor current, often six times the full-load ampere rating, depending on the motor Code Letter rating [430.7(B)]. This will cause the motor winding to overheat and be destroyed if the current isn稚 quickly reduced or removed."

Electrical Motor Calculator

Plugging in 1 hp , 90% efficiency, 85 PF (power factor) and 230V to the calculator in this link.

You get:

1 phase = 4a.
FLA = 5A

What does FLA stand for? Full Load Amps! At full load the motor draws 5A, 230V * 5A = 1150W; 1 HP = 746W FLA for a 1 HP motor = 1150/746 or 1.54 times.

Now look at the chart for starting amps, what does the FLC state? 150% to 300% of running current and what's 300%? It's 3 times, exactly what I said. I work with this stuff everyday my systems are built on these calculations. Are you off the grid running several inverters on a daily basis?

Generator Sizing for a Motor Load - Electric motors, generators & controls engineering FAQ - Eng-Tips

Rules of Thumb:

Most generators are capable of delivering 300% of the rated current for 10 seconds, which is sufficient time for most induction motors to get up to the rated speed. So for DOL starting a generator rated 2 to 3 times the kVA of the motor will easily supply the starting kVA of the motor and for a star/delta start even a generator sized just above the rated motor kVA will be sufficient. These rules of thumb generally result in generator size that will keep the voltage dip during the motor starting within acceptable limit.

You bring up an excellent point that I think most people overlook. I don't need a generator for a one day outage. I need it for extended outages. My solution was to buy a large generator that I can run for short durations as needed and a Honda EU2000 that I run for the fridge and a light or two. I can run the EU all day on about 1 1/2 gal. of gas. I can go a long time without a huge quantity of fuel on hand.

We do the same thing with the EU2000. Last year when we where out for a week up here I loaned it to my neighbor to do exactly that. It's expensive for its size but you can keep your fridge going and then move it to other appliances if you need to. The big plus is how little fuel it uses, the low noise is very nice too. The EU2000 has an energy saving feature that works well also.
If you can afford two gens, go with this one and a larger one if you can, that's my advice.

Someone asked about running the tractor inside with the door closed. This is a photo of my setup, since modified slightly for my current tractor. The exhaust is regular exhaust pipe from a muffler shop.

Please, if you haven't, get a carbon monoxide alarm if you are going to do this.

They gave me another PTO shaft, one that was longer.

Called customer service and after some checking she said the supplier shipped out some with an inappropriate pto shaft. They are going to send me a new one. When I talk with a live person at Farm King they couldn't be nicer...their IT must be a real joy given my email responses.
