Pulling what, your kids little red wagon? No matter what pulling any load is going to affect mpg. Your dash is lying to you. Hitch up your load and start with a full tank of fuel then tow it 100 miles and fill up again and do the math. Pulling any load over 8, 000# you will be lucky to see double digest no matter what brand of truck.

Chris

You got me. I pulled it 100 miles. Yup, still 16.4 mpg. I don't have a tractor over #8000, should I put some rocks in it and try again?

Love it... lol

In all serious I have owned two GM trucks, a Toyota, nine Fords, a Dodge, and a Nissan. All 4x4 except one, and four diesel. These are all 1997 and newer and I drive about 20,000 miles a year in each and tow loads from 7,000# to 25,000# about 5,000 miles a year or more and track every drop of fuel for business purposes. Its just the way it works while towing.

14k backhoe on a 17.2k GVWR trailer behind a 8.8k GVWR F250= No CDL.

Still over capacity on the truck side.

I don't think there is a way to pull a backhoe by the books without scuffing some numbers or getting a CDL. Not to say people don't do it. Just putting the food out there for thought to investigate before you buy.

For my business I've had a couple SRW trucks because of not wanting to go over 10K gvwr because I've been told insurance goes up. I also can't park a drw easily around where I work and they suck offroad without having a 4x4. If I need to haul something heavier I just pay to get it delivered or in the case of a backhoe we just drive it around town.

Air brakes have nothing to do with it. Many RV's have air brakes.

Its true that if you are commercial you need a air brake endorsement but for non commercial it has no bearing.

Chris

Around here the same dump druck with air brakes requires a CDL, one without does not (at least that's the way it was a few years ago)...I have friends who played on that fence. Maybe the laws have changed over the last some odd years... Yes there were GVW issues involved and I have no intention of nearing those numbers with anything that I pull.

I'm aware that RV's are exempt...

You might be able to scuff some numbers and get by with a new SRWF350. You'd have to add the gvwr to the tow rating and use a trailer with 2 heavy duty 8000lb singles. It would be pushing it though on the tires, axles and ratings.

I say singles because around here I've known people popped for pulling a dual tandem with a SRW.

What, not WD, chains and anti-sway bars?...Living dangerously. :D:shocked:

I get similar empty mileage with my '11 GMC 6.2...Mind does around 12-13 towing depending on the what's and where's. I get about 1mpg worse with my gate trailers due to the drag.....I can live with that.
