Around here the same dump druck with air brakes requires a CDL, one without does not (at least that's the way it was a few years ago)...I have friends who played on that fence. Maybe the laws have changed over the last some odd years... Yes there were GVW issues involved and I have no intention of nearing those numbers with anything that I pull.

I'm aware that RV's are exempt...

Its all about weights here and now, not air brakes. But the weight issue is easily defeated with farm tags.

Heck, I have driven a 80,000# 18 wheeler with farm tags and no cdl. I have also driven a 40,000# RV pulling a 24,000# tri axle box trailer

You might be able to scuff some numbers and get by with a new SRWF350. You'd have to add the gvwr to the tow rating and use a trailer with 2 heavy duty 8000lb singles. It would be pushing it though on the tires, axles and ratings.

I say singles because around here I've known people popped for pulling a dual tandem with a SRW.

I pulled my 30' 25,000# gvwr tandem dually GN with my old 1999 SRW F350 all over a handfull of states without even a eye batted.

I sold the GN but still have a 18,000# tri axle I have pulled all over a dozen states with 3 Fords and a Cheby.

I think it is all my fault, mentioning that I didn't want to get a CDL or a truck that would make it obvious. It is as much about how the law is enforced as it is how it is written. My F450 pulling an enclosed trailer just looks like another weekend warrior with a racecar, motorcycles, whatever, which don't even get a second look by the CHP here. Moving into a small Freightliner or such would make it so I can't avoid the CDL issue.

Ok I talked to the person who was ticketed I was referring to. Wasn't because of a dual tandem on a SRW but because the combination of truck and trailer ratings went over 26000. He said they said something about the SRW and dual tandem trailer but I guess I misunderstood him they didn't ticket him for it. Maybe they were just being dicks. He sold the trailer though and got a lighter rated one.


Also, this is for daily commercial duty. Maybe they are a little stricter on that.

3,800 minimal on the pin. You'd have to find an F250 that weighs 5,000lbs and is rated to tow 19,000. A mustang weighs almost 4000, good luck.

Try 1800. Easily doable with a 3/4 ton.

Nothing has changed since ~1990.

Air brakes needing a CDL is one of the bigger myths out there.

So you are knowingly running around illegally?

I fail to see the difference between a 450 and a FLD.

Either way your trailer alone needs the CDL A.

Hauling firewood in a new truck?????? Buy a used one ton dually with a dump body. Set that up for your towing needs and only use it when you have a real load. Then get a Nissan Frontier with a 4.0 liter engine and a six speed tranny. Gets 21 mpg while hauling your groceries around.
Consider the pot stirred.

You got me. I pulled it 100 miles. Yup, still 16.4 mpg. I don't have a tractor over #8000, should I put some rocks in it and try again?
