Outrage after NY paper publishes names of gun permit holders

I disagree. Don't you think it would be useful to know if an unbalanced individual in your neighborhood had a permit for a semi automatic rifle? Why should that be a secret? In this case it appears just to be those who have pistol/revolver permits. I presume one can get lists of people with pilot's licenses or liquor licenses. Why should gun owners be treated differently?

I'd want to know if there was a gun in a house that one of my kids was likely to be playing in. I'd take the opportunity to ask the parents in that house how they secured the weapon. If it didn't meet my standards for safety I'd simply not let my kid go there. Why shouldn't I have that information?

good point, however there sure is a trade off here, your/our need for knowledge and security, and all of our right to privacy. Personally I don't think crooks are all that smart, and anyone targeting a home WITH guns is a true fool.
Is this just a NY thing? I thought you only had to have a permit for concealed weapons. This strikes me as a Wikileaks grab for attention.

The issue came up in Texas a few years ago and the State, wisely, declared CHL holder info non public information.

I would like all states to adopt that. Now a bad guy can get your name, pull up your address on Google earth, scope out your security weakness and know if he is going to have to worry about a gun when he breaks into your house. This is stupidity at its max. Ken Sweet

Yes, I can see that if someone was specifically looking to steal a gun such information would be helpful. Good reason to have a gun safe and alarm system if you keep guns in the house. Again though, it seems to me that the smart cat burglars are typically after much higher value items than just guns. The dumb average criminal would probably not have the wherewithal to be able to plan on how to steal a gun based on a newspaper article. Why bother when guns are so easily obtained by other means?

What is the value of printing the names in the paper? How bout we print the names of people who makes lots of money? In the great state of Ohio they don't print the names, they used too. The printing of the names is also the reason why I am againist having to have a permit. The whole concept of CHL is you don't know who's carrying and who don't.

Why shouldn't I have your home address? Please post it. Sure, it's personal information but I can't see any harm coming of it and since you'll be providing it freely I can't see how this would measure up to the violation these people - both those identified as having guns and those who have no means of defense - are experiencing. Please, where do you live?

I live in Knox county ,Tn I can go in my back yard and blast away ,have a bonfire , raise chickens ,have a garden , use any of my equipment ,make as much noise as I want and no one cares ! If you want to live in the city don't squawk when the rules are different from the country , I have neighbors who sell guns at garage sales ! Gun laws only affect legal gun owners , The guns used in Newport were legally owned and poorly stored . When I was in high school 35 years ago we students used to take our guns to school and refinish the stocks for credit in woodshop ! you would be better off banning all the mindless violent video games and teach responsible gun ownership !:2cents:

Fifty years ago drove pick-up to school with hunting rifle in holder in rear window and never locked the doors while going to school.
And wonder if the Okla. lady that has lost her husband a few months before and had a small child in the home that called 911 saying 2 men were trying to break into her home and had placed a couch across the door to prevent there entry. Only to be told the sheriff was unavailable at that time.Killed one cause the other to rethink his actions. Did she have a legal permit to own a gun. The State legal Dept. wanted to charge her until the Govenor stopped the charges.
If everyone carried crime would decrease. or develop holy bodies.

You are exactly right ken,,and there will be crooks , burglars and home invaders that do just that...Just makes targets out of every one of them but it also makes targets out of the folks not on the list...now the bad guys know they are unarmed...Just really stupid.

Knoxville reminds me of where I grew up in New Jersey / Maine many years ago , My own personal opinion is that the younger generations of today are very weak minded and soft if you know what I mean ,I just about puke every time I see another cubicle worker driving a civic with gel in his hair and texting while they drive ,And as far as tailgaters nowadays I check my brakes frequently ! Where did parents go wrong to have raised such a soft generation of self entitled young men ? Most have no idea which way to turn a screwdriver to tighten a screw ,maybe if the shooter from Newport had a father in his life things would be different ,Maybe not .But they have lost the ability to even perform the easiest jobs in manual labor and think being successful means living in a gated community driving a BMW while their Mexican gardener tends to the home ?:confused3:

I would be willing to bet she won't be happy seeing all her personal info posted all over the internet ! I think think they should post any public info available on every "journalist "posting any story ! This would probably cut down on stories like this .

Let me see if I got this right? The gumment now has easy access to all the information they need to confiscate licensed guns and a GPS map of how to drive to each house and take them away. What kind of "low life" leader would undertake such a endeavor?
