I have to agree about TBN membership being far to the right of the average American. BTW I think you are doing a fine job debating this crowd pretty much all by yourself. Enjoy it while it lasts cause I can feel a crackdown from the site owners coming on as this place is turning into GunByNet.

So long as we keep it civil, the TBN honchos are likely to let us continue.

It is educational for me to hear the arguments from my gun nut buddies. I presume they benefit from hearing opinions outside the NRA echo chambers too. They won't be likely to acknowledge it but I think my debate partners are all (well almost all) smart enough to appreciate they are as far to the right as I am to the left on this issue.

Guns are not evil but policies that make it easy for evil or crazy people to get ahold of weapons optimized for killing of many humans in a short time are nuts and need to be changed no matter how difficult it may be. I think arguments that these weapons are necessary for self defense are silly and the notion that we have a democracy rather than tyranny is only because we allow citizens to have assault weapons is just insanely naive. These weapons are primarily used by sportsmen. Sports do not trump rights of children to be safe in schools. The Germans allow AR15 type weapons for sports but have severe restrictions on where they can be used and a strict months long process for how to acquire one. I could support that type of arrangement. Germany had something like 250 gun homicides last year.

In Britain you are not even allowed to carry a pocket knife. I read of a worker sent to jail because he was on a job, put a razor knife in his pocket, forgot it was there, and went to lunch. Someone saw it and he was arrested. And if you have the slightest opportunity to run away, you are not allowed to defend yourself against personal attack. Bands of roving yobs terrorize people on a regular basis. The quality of secure life there pretty much sucks. God help us if we turn into Britain.

Moss, have you ever been to Britain? Virtually nobody lives in fear of violence. You can certainly find exceptions reported but look at the statistics. A citizen of the USA has a MUCH higher risk of violent death than a Brit. I've lived in London twice and cannot think of a part of town I would not walk through at midnight.

Many of the values I spoke of is where (the immigrants you cited) those values originated....the "left" is the problem...
