See the problem is those against guns mostly do not check their facts and seldom have anything but emotions to back up their stance....

This is where the lawmakers will stick it to us.....

Yes and I think we are in line to get stuck before too long. I don't know how ignorant the legislators are, but they will certainly rely on the ignorance of the general public to pass much more restrictive laws. I am not using ignorant in a derogatory manner, many if not most people just really don't know that much about it, feel no need to research it and just trust the legislators to do what is best.

I am sure others will think I am ignorant of the "facts" supporting gun control though.

I have a question for you Aussie's that may or may not have a bearing on the crime volume on your island. I have a good friend that worked at a US military installation near Ayers Rock(I think) back in the early 90's. He worked there 2 years and his work was classified, so I know nothing else about his job. We talked quite a bit about Australia since It's on my bucket list to experience.

His biggest complaint comparing it to us in America was the lack of punishment for serious crimes. Lord knows we have our own problems with criminals doing their entire allotment of conviction time, but he said that Aussies, generally speaking, fail to hand out harsh sentences for the big crimes(murder, agg battery, robbery, rape, etc). He was specific on a few cases that had occurred and both of us were dumbfounded as to how short the prison terms were. So I am wondering if that is still the case and if so, maybe firearms are not that important to the criminals since they know they won't do very much time even if they get caught? Yes it's a simplistic statement, but I do have to wonder if & how different the criminal attitude can be from continent to content.

I've talked about this before, but I worked in Joburg in South Africa for a little while. Everyone there has the right to open carry, and they do. All private homes are enclosed with a security wall topped with barbed wire or cerpantine wire. They are all patrolled by heavily armed security guards 24/7. The shopping malls are walled off compounds with checkpoints at the entrances and armed paramilitary forces checking you and your car as you leave.

It does not deter the criminal element whatsoever. In fact it has the opposite effect, the level of violence has escalated to the point where every possible encounter is likely going to be lethal. They don't care that you're armed. They just shoot you and take your possessions including your weapon.

If you continue to arm everyone as is proposed by certain groups, this will be your future.

FACT; there are more guns STOLEN in the US every year, then there are legally owned in all of Canada. Every year! How is this possible if there are so many responsible gun owners.

Got anything to substantiate that?

First this isn't South Africa and the situation you describe is the old "chicken or the egg" thing; which came first or which "caused" the other as you presume. If you are claiming a cause and effect, do you suppose if they tore down all the security walls, fired all the armed guards the problem of armed violence would go away? Will the criminals go along with a force reduction and just politely ask for your valuables and go on their way if you refuse.

Also as per Roy, source for information please.

First this isn't South Africa .

You're not far off my friend. Joburg was one of the wealthiest cities in the world not too long ago. Now the business district is abandoned to the gangs. It is very surreal to see this city with modern high rises and infrastructure sitting empty. Detroit comes to mind.

you see you survey says " of approximately 500,000 " guns stolen per year. yet USA today says. for the same time period you cite "The report by the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation says nearly 1.7 million firearms were reported to police as stolen from January 1993 through August 2002. The number of guns stolen per year has declined, from 221,322 reported in 1993 to 138,035 in 2001, the report says." SO who is lying..???
