Deere Dude made some excellent points.
I have an acquaintance whose child just went into the Navy. She'll be making $1700 a month, plus being fed, clothed and schooled AND serving her fellow man. You can't get that deal anywhere else.
Ahh, but, let us not forget those brave men and women, put their very lives on the line for that deal.

God bless those who serve, past, present and future.

We just can't afford that kind of cost...take a look at what Moss posted

That is a $30K to $50K a year package ...probably more than that ...just depends on how much education for each member of the military, how much medical attention they need...could cost much ...much more.

I say ...bring back the draft and reduce the pay to subsistance levels like when I was in...In 1966 I think base Army pay for an E-1 was $60 to $70 a month...and at that time civilians were making $500 and up per month...So if you look at $17K a yr. salary plus all the other benefits...these army privates...E-1's in all branches are making far more than their civilian peers...in fact most of their generation are looking for jobs....We just can't afford to pay our military these exorbitant wages....

We should stop being the worlds cop and the draft will fairly spread the risk to all families....the super wealth ones too....and each upon turning 18 yrs. old will serve 2 yrs. in some service capacity...

We can't afford this...otherwise...:2cents:

I cannot put a price tag on Military Service. Those that provide the service are danger close, beholden to the politics of the moment.

I do know, that those who have been in the service, continue to contribute to worthy causes long after they leave. So the cost may have lasting affects over time.

Your comments and opinion are worthy of a good debate in another thread? Care to start one on the topic?

Sure....we could start it in Friendly Politics...but my position is simple.... Since it was your suggestion...you start and I will join...:)

I'm certainly glad you are not in control! I was in in 1967 and we did not do anything electronically. Computers were non-existent. Now most things done in the military are done by or with the use of computers. If we went back to your standard the only people that would remain after the draft period would be the ones that can't get along in the outside world. If all you require is to be able to dig a foxhole or burn the shitters then you may be right. Now the uniformed services is mostly a high tech job. There are 9 people supporting one combat soldier. Those that serve earn every penny! Just my 2 cents.

That would be nice. I looked into them and didn't see a degree that I liked. I don't want to go to a school and get a degree in something I don't really care for.

I worked for a software development company for many years. I could count on one hand the programmers that actually had a degree in computer science. Things may be changing now, but I have not seen many people actually work in the career they educated themselves for. Take your time and take a second look. Every business and most public services have to deal with budgets, human resources, project management in addition to the technical skill (computer programming, firefighting, law enforcement, emergency medicine) required to carry out their job. Raising cows and farming take quite a bit of business acumen. As an IT manager I was required more and more to get into disciplines I never educated myself for. Maybe someone else can chime in and expand on this thought.
