Java is widely used in content served up by websites and (locally insatlled) client software. Oracle commited to a fix shortly.

My dad (who is in the IT industry) told me about this, so I disabled it for now. In Firefox it tells you which java plugin is the problem, but I disabled them all.

How do you do it in Firefox?

How to turn off Java applets

This article explains how to disable the Java plugin in Firefox so that Java applets no longer run.

By default, Firefox allows Java applets to launch automatically. However, you may decide that you do not want Java applets to run. To disable Java applets in Firefox:

At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Plugins panel.
Click on the Java (TM) Platform plugin to select it.
Click on the Disable button (if the button says Enable, Java is already disabled).

Java applets will no longer be permitted to launch in Firefox.

Thanks a lot, easy to do. Now on to my Vista and Windows 7.

Dan, I used your link to "Verify Java Version", even though I knew I had 7. Well, it showed I have Version 7, update 9, and recommended update 10.

Isn't that standard operating procedure for the news media?

Unfortunately. :( I just read a story about a plank owner of the USS Enterprise that is being decommissioned. He was one of only two plank holders that were allowed on the ship during its trip to Norfolk where the reactors will be removed and the ship sold for scrap. One of the last lines in the story was,
He still has a piece of the original plank from the ship's wooden hull.
:laughing::laughing::laughing: I did not know we were building nuke powered aircraft carriers with wooden hulls... I am hoping that the new outlet does not have an editor reviewing the article since that would show that there are at least TWO people who are clueless.

My uncle was a plank owner on the USS Lincoln. One of the few regrets I have is not taking the opportunity to take the ship from Fort Lauderdale FLA to Norfork. Work was too busy and I did not think I could get away. I should have because I will never have that chance again. Dummy was I. I did get a tour of the ship and danged if I saw any wood in the hull but I guess that was because the Lincoln was newer than the Big E.:laughing::laughing:

I DO have a piece of the deck from the USS North Carolina. They were selling them years ago to raise money. VERY NICE piece of teak plank. I THINK the teak was original to the ship. The fund raising was to replace the decking so I think I have a part of a plank that went through WWII.

Later,
Dan

Oracle's website shows Java Version 7 Update 11 released today fixed vulnerabilities. I found that I had a couple of older versions, as well as Version 7 on my computer, so I "uninstalled" all the Java versions earlier today and just now installed the new Version 7 Update 11.

Guess I am too late. I just checked and its says it last updated just 3 hours ago. So I disabled Java. Not sure if that will do any good.

FWIW...

just for the record..."javascript" is not "JAVA" and is not even related...regardless of the names...

Ant browser will run "javascript"...it is commn...You do not need JAVA to view web pages...many will not work without "javascript" enabled...but again...you do not need JAVA (virtual machine) on your PC unless a specific web site requires if for an application interface...

"JAVA" Not "javascript" is currently being warned about....
