When I was going to buy my truck (2007 Dodge Ram, quad cab, 8ft Bed, with the Cummins Turbo Diesel) I had a hard time deciding which brand. I finally decided to look at other that were doing the same thins I wanted to do with my truck, which was haul horses around... Cheyenne Frontier Days was in town - the worlds largest outdoor rodeo. I drove through the back lots to see what the guys that depended on hauling their horses around the country to make their living were driving. I do realize that Dodge is a PRCA sponsor, and Ford is a PBR sponsor. About 60% of the cowboys drove Dodge 2500/3500 with diesel engines. 15% each to Ford and Chevy/GMC with the remained a mix of Toyotas and Semis. I bought a Dodge.
So, my suggestion is find people that make their living doing what you want to get a truck for, then find the best deal for the accessories and add-ons that you want. None of them are perfect vehicles, none of them are complete trash, and I think you can get two trucks off the same line and one will work great and one will be a lemon. In most cases all the consumer publications recommend against extended warranties, but IMHO, when you are buying something you expect to significantly outlast the warranty it might be worth a look.
