Long range shooting.....what do I need?

He may have been referring to readily available hunting loads.....not sure. But your point is well taken.

You can buy Nosler partition bullets factory loaded in the Federal Premium line They list the 150 (P270E) load at 2830 and 100/ +4.3, 200/ +5.1, 300/, zero, 400/-11.8. They cost about $1.50 a round but they don't give partitions away even on a load your own basis. Even a round nosed 150 is only about 1.5 inches higher to get to 300 yard zero but they drop off real quick after 300. Have fun practicing.
Edit to add Remington 700s have a 1 in 10 twist according to my Speer manual.

I have some of those in 180g for my 700 30-06. It is my favorite hunting round when I can afford them. Right now I can't seem to find them for much less than $2 per round, $38+ per box.

I will give you a great deal on a Nikon Rangefinder that I bought last season after I "lost" my original.... Needless to say, cleaning up my reloading bench after the season, I find a paper bag with all sorts of stuff in it, including my missing rangefinder...

The new one was one of these. Send me a PM if interested

I appreciate the kind offer and I know I'll regret not buying it but shooting budget is already rapidly exceeding what my happy marriage will tolerate.

Shooting long range .22 is fun. Just like switching to ultra-light fishing tackle. See how good you can get with the small stuff. Anyone can hit a target with a cannon.

I think my Remington 513s would be well suited for this and if I pull the 6x Leopold off the .270 (for a tactical scope) then I can put the 6x on the .22. It might need some trigger work. My friend says that to accomodate for the amount of drop in the .22 at long range there are mounts/rings that angle downwards! Amazing.

A month or so ago I set a 1.5 liter wine bottle out at 175 yards and my daughter and her boyfriend and I were going to take turns with the 513 (4x Leopold) to see who could hit it from the porch. I took the first shot, completely guessed at how much to hold over and plugged it with the first shot from a sitting position! Now I will admit that it was pure luck that I got the elevation right but I'll give the 513 credit for the windage. It was dead on....no wind of course. I don't think my daughter or her beau were impressed at all........

So what type of .22s for this? I've got a brick of Remington standard velocity long rifle plus a bucket load of the cheapo high velocity stuff.

Try them both paying attention to and calling your shots and determine which shoots best in your 22. That is part of the game. Keeping track of what works and what doesn't and determining what the real causes of inaccuracy are is an art and if you don't keep good notes you will find yourself repeating the same failed experiment over and over. It is important to change just one thing at a time to sort out what is an improvement and what is not.
$2.00 a shot for premium 270s may well be. I load my own and haven't bought any new ammo in a couple of years.

You should be able to get .22 inserts for some rifles.

In general the standard velocity .22s have been more accurate in this gun out to 50 yards which is what it is currently sighted in for. The bulk high velocity rounds seem to be less reliable, make more soot and junk and even look cheap. There may be some quality high velocity stuff out there but I have not researched it.

That's when you hand them the gun and say "Next".

Well, you cand spend $20+ for a box of 50 .22LR Eley match ammo. Or a brick of 500 cheapos for almost the same price. You can consistency yourself into the poorhouse pretty quickly. ;)
