Pallet Fork Question

Regarding fixed vs floating forks, there is a some information about their differences here: Pallet Fork Design Comparison.

Nice link, Artillian. A better explanation than my sorta lame verbal one. As the link says, if you're moving pallets on level surfaces all day long, the floaters may be OK for you. But fixed are much better for all purpose use.

Thanks Todd, and I was only hoping to add to your excellent verbal explanation.

I too, am in the market for a set of pallet forks. I'm hopping to be able to fasten them together, or remove one and dig out some 4' diameter trees that I want to transplant. Has anyone who has a good quality set of pallet forks ever used them for a similar purpose? How did it work out?

Check out Artillian's link in the above post. It explains how the forks work on most fixed models. The forks can be slid toward the center of the rack to be put nearer to each other. Generally, if you slide the fork to dead center, you can pull out on the bottom while lifting up on the fork to remove it if needed. But be advised, each fork tine is usually pretty heavy.
When I need to remove my forks from the rack to add a trailer hitch receiver, I lower the forks to about 6 or 7 inches from the floor and then slide a cheap Harbor Freight moving dolly under them. They remain standing on the dolly and it saves your back from lowering them completely to the floor. Plus, you can roll them out of the way.

Good point about the forks coming out when slid to dead center. I let a set of the type that slides on a bar, get away from me yesterday. The advertiser needs ro remove his ad from Craig's List. I'm thinking I could build a frame for a pair like that, slide them to the center, then attach a bracket to prevent float and hold them together. Artillian's link makes me think that the hybrid type probably wouldn't suit my intended purpose.

Ill have to look at my set, but I don't think they are removable. They are heavy though. When I adjust them I raise the loader up and point the forks straight down at the ground so all the weight is off the slide. They move in and out much easier that way.

They went on, They will come off. How else do you replace worn out forks?

There's a notch dead center for one fork. Never looked for it or really paid it much attention. Hope I won't need it anytime soon. This set is way stouter than I need but it was a deal I had to take.
