Pallet Fork Question

   / Pallet Fork Question #31
just a quick note. I used to have a JD870...and it has a lift capacity of about 700# using the bucket. Im not sure how much this fork attachment weight compared to the rather light bucket, but this weight would have to be subtracted from the 700# lifting capacity.

By the way...the 700# was confirmed using concrete bags.....i was able to lift 11 - 60# pound bags, but one more and it wouldnt lift without picking up the rear liquid filled tires .

I think the 430 is rated at 1250 pounds. Not sure though. I would like the lighter artillian myself but these looked like they were used twice. $400. No brainer.

I tried to make a swap with my dad, him buy the artillian and I'd give him this frontier fork. He hasn't come around yet. They are rated for 3500#. Way overkill.

I will say this, the bucket had been on twice since I got them in early fall.

Hey YesDeere,

Your dad is a heck of a nice guy and says he loves his Artillian Forks! Just kidding, thanks for the mention and it's true, once you get a set of forks the bucket becomes an accessory for a lot of people, regardless of whose forks you have.

Artillian

The reason I wanted to swap is because he has a 4720 with the 400 loader. The set I have is too heavy for the 430 and better suited for him. The last time I looked there wasn't an offering for that size on your website. Is that still correct?

What is the actual weight difference in the two sets? You have a great looking product by the way.

I too, am in the market for a set of pallet forks. I'm hopping to be able to fasten them together, or remove one and dig out some 4' diameter trees that I want to transplant. Has anyone who has a good quality set of pallet forks ever used them for a similar purpose? How did it work out?

Stuckmotor,

In lieu of a backhoe, forks can work for that purpose however the complication is that with a big long 42 or 48" fork tine, it's not optimal working out at the tip of the fork. Hence the "Landscaping Fork". I don't mean to self promote, but I don't think you'll find anything like this anywhere else. They are intended to be used as a prying tool and for stone wall construction as opposed to a bona-fide "fork".

There are also companies out there making "scoops" that attach to your bucket for your purpose, but I am personally not a fan of attaching things to bucket cutting edges, other than a toothbar. Aside from zero visibility, those sorts of things place undue strain on the bucket. At the very least, you can kiss the straightness of your cutting edge goodbye using things like that. The next time you try to level up a roadbed or something you'll be starting out with an ocean wave right out of the gate.

I'm not sure I understand exactly, but the Artillian forks are suitable for most everything short of the 4000 series machines and similar. I believe that your pop's 4720 could make great use of your Frontiers and then your 430 loader will fit up to the Artillian forks snug as a bug in a rug and you'll pick up hundreds of pounds worth of lift capacity. Sorry to keep pasting links here (I really never do this) but there is a loader comparison and applicability chart here that will hopefully help if I haven't answered your question.

Sorry. I wasn't very clear. You answered the question, nothing available for the 400 loader.

I will keep hounding him. Maybe soon

Couple of points, one, when we can finally get a design out for the 400 size loaders, it wil still be a whole new design. The current design won't likely change, in case you were hoping for a one size fits both. The design for the 400 loaders would be heavier, for sure. Two, people with 400 loaders are using them but the limitations must be understood. I do not generally advise this but some folks have been determined to for one reason or another.

Anyway, I really just wanted to say thanks for being on your short list.

I have the floating forks, they work better on uneven ground for picking up brush.

I put a chain around them at the bend so they can float a little, and still dump.

Chris,
Thank-you. I'll kick that around in my brain for a while.
