Building a stick frame house in the woods in 90 days

Some counties now require a dam to keep liquids and volatile gases from going down the stairs into the basement along with a metal door with special seals at the basement level. If this is required in Nelson county, then the area between the top of the stairwell and the Genset wall will have to be poured another step height, 6"+ higher than the garage floor.

Steps, stoops and other tripping hazards are not a friend to us as we age.

Ron

Ron, I know what you mean about having a step before going into the basement. I told my builder (this is my second house with him) that I did not want a step before I go downstairs. He said code required it, like you said to keep gases, oils, etc. from going to the basement. If I recall correctly the block layer installed a cinder block "step" with an extremely thin layer of sandmix or sort to allow it to pass inspection. Once I got the occupancy go-ahead the step came out. It makes no sense to me that you would be in the garage, step up, then step down to go into the basement. Talk about a tripping hazard. Also the double door in the basement is an exterior door with very good seals all the way around. And when I start the car the overhead door is always open to keep fumes to a minimum.

The distance from my man door to the basement first step is around 11 feet so I have a very safe distance.

Pete, I decided to take a couple pics showing the little laundry room and the full wall. Stanley

Stanley,
Am I understanding your layout?
You have your car backed in the garage.
You must have a 2.5-3 car wide garage.
So is the main house behind the exhaust pipe?

Ron, here is a picture of the house. The garage is entered from the right side looking at it from the front. The size of the garage is approximately 26 feet deep (garage door to back of Honda) X 30 feet. The steps take off (I'm guessing) about 5 feet from the 30 foot. Living space is behind the Honda and also behind the little wash room. Hope this answers your questions.

Thanks Stanley,
I figured as much by the way you showed your basement entrance. Our house is very similar. Cape cod with a full dormer in the back and 2 smaller ones on the front. Full 50 foot covered porch in the front like yours. Then a 12 x 16 orchid growing flower room connecting to living space where your garage is located. Full basement under all and the garage is in the basement part under where your garage is located.

Looking forward to seeing the valleys and ridges all connected on Pete's mom's house tonight, maybe even roof structure started over the grand front entrance. 1st of May is approaching fast.
Gotta go. Horse hooves need trimming.
Ron

Looking good, having a roof on is a huge milestone.

Time to put the US Flag on the highest truss! (or a pine branch...an Italian tradition I believe)

Curious as to size of the crew. They seem to make very good daily progress.

Often, in our area, getting the roof on calls for a topping party :)

Looking good -- I like the way they handled the gable overhangs -- that is the best way to do it.
