My kid's first trip to the ER

My 21 month old son squished his finger in the lid of our coffee table tonight. In the hinge. Popped it like a grape! We took him to the ER and they fixed him up and he'll be fine. I may never recover! This is the first time he's really hurt himself more than a bump or a bruise, and it really upset me. I took a minute to sympathize with all I must have put my parents through, with bone-headed injuries.

I really don't know how parents who lose their kids do it. I hope I never find out.

I know the feeling, and its terrible! Back in January, my then 29 month old was dancing around the living room and fell on her arm oddly. She screamed and couldn't move it, so off to the ER we went. Luckily, she popped her elbow out of place instead of breaking her arm. Easy fix, and no follow up visits. They popped it back in and It was like it never happened. Boy did I feel bad for her though, it's just heartbreaking to know your child is in pain.

The whole time waiting in the ER. I was mad at myself o no preventing it, but how? I'm not one to force my child to live in a bubble, and probably give more freedom than a lot of parents, but that's how I was raised. So I just came to terms with the fact that stuff like this will happen and was just happy she didn't need a cast.

Glad he seemed to take it well and hoping for a quick and easy recovery!

Wait until this happens to you my first grandson and I were playing with squirt guns, I started to chase him he lost his footing landed on the windshield of the battery operated jeep 6 stitches right along his right eye. It took me a long time to forgive myself.

accidents happen... sometimes you just can't foresee what may occur...
Back in spring break 1984 we were visiting the inlaws at a mobile home park in Florida.
Like most folks there, they had one of those adult tricycles, with a basket behind the rear wheels.
Our 10 year old daughter was riding the trike up and down the street, with our 5 year old daughter riding in the basket.
The 5 year-old lost her balance, ended up grabbing the bottom of the chain as it went around the sprocket at the centre of the rear axle... took off about a half inch of her left index finger.
Surgeon at Tampa General re-attached it, but it didn't take.
She's 35 now, no problems other than that finger gets cold faster in the winter. She even plays piano.
My wife didn't forgive herself for years, and we found out years later that our older daughter had always felt it was her fault.

I dread that day. I'm a first time father of an almost one year old boy. I can see him doing exactly what your son did. He loves to go around opening and closing things. I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

As a kid, I never had to make one visit to the ER for an injury. Maybe we'll get lucky and avoid it all together but I doubt it.

Is he your ownly? If you and yours are planning more, say by the time number three roles around, you'll be saying "get over it" to broken bones and what not.

Life is really amazing. Cherish the growing years, it goes by, way fast.

He's in a great mood this morning. Now we just have to keep the bandage on until it heals up a bit. I imagine it's still pretty gooshy under there at the moment!

Did make me smile,, we had four children,, three sons and a daughter,, the emergency waiting room was like a second home.. not really,, but we did make a few trips to it over a period of 20 years or so.. mostly cuts on the boys and my daughter fell out of a tree,,broke her arms,, They were all raised around tractor and haying equipmemt,, Not one emergency room visit was from the farm,, all was from playing sports or throwing rock,, lol.. or play in the bayou.. by the way the youngest is 36 and oldest is 46 now.. I doubt you'll find many parents out there who haven't been to the ER with their kids. Just part of growing up and being a kid. Scary has heck but it's just part of growing up. Glad your son is OK.......nice family!:thumbsup:

He looks like he's making out OK...My 17 month old is always making us catch our breath, just knowing there'll be one a little harder to shake off coming his way eventually...
