Buying Advice L series, what makes it Grand?

Okay, so we've compared FELs.
Now what about hoes?
Do the different models have different limitations in the size hoe they can take?
My L3240 has a BH90 backhoe,I could have gotten the BH92 but it was more money. As far as I know, all Grand L 40 series are available with either backhoe. If the 3240 has less hydraulic pressure then I suppose the backhoe would have less capabilities.I have raised my pressure so that is not a concern for me.

They are basically the same but the 92 can go on to a cab tractor.

So, the L3240 (Grand) can take a BH 92, but in the specifications the L3200 & l3800 lists only the BH77.
You have to move up to the L4600 to get the BH92. That's a difference that I consider a little more than just "bells and whistles" between the model lines.

There's almost 1000# difference between the L3240 and the L3200, that's a lot of steel and at least some of it goes into the frame. Even the L4600 weighs less than the L3240. A bh puts a lot of stress on the frame, so it shouldn't be a huge surprise. These are exactly the types of differences I saw when I look at them, not just the bells and whistles. Weight also translates into traction and it helps the tractor win the tug of war with the hoe.

That is not just bells and whistles as the only difference. There is far more built into the Grand L chassis tractors.

Well, if kootenai is still hanging around, I'm sure he's having a real hoot following the hornet's nest he stirred up! This is kind of like tossing a bone into a pack of hungry dogs. Cheers to all. :drink:

Not really the same. The BH92 has a curved boom and bigger cylinders with more digging power. It also has a nicer method of unlocking the boom, allowing the operator to unlock it from the backhoe seat. The BH90 has a pin to lock the boom which has to be removed before you get on the backhoe seat. Not a big deal but it makes the BH92 a bit more user friendly.Another small difference is the BH92 has rubber pads for your feet whereas the BH90 only has a metal floor,I made a rubber mat for mine. The BH92 can also be had with a mechanical or hydraulic thumb. My understanding is that Kubota does not recommend putting a thumb on the BH90 as the dipper stick was not built strong enough to handle it.There are probably other differences as well that I am not aware of.The BH92 is an improvement on the BH90,part of how tractors improve over time.

When was the term Grand first used for the L series tractors?
Was there "non Grand" L series tractor with HST in 1999?

The Lxx10s were the first Grand Ls, as stated. The new "standard L" at the time was the L2500DT,
which I had. This was an ultra-basic tractor with low weight, small operator station, crash-box
tranny, and low 2200psi hydraulics.

Around that time, Kubota decided that "standard" Ls would be "Lxx00", and Grands would be Lxx10s.
Subsequently, all standard Ls ended in "00", and Grands were, Lxx10s, 30s, 40s, etc.
But the earlier Kubotas that ended in '00' were decided NOT basic. The L2900/L3300/L3600/L4200
came just before the Grand L 10s and had all the latest features that Kubota was developing,
including the new FST, fully-synchroed tranny. No crash-box was even offered in that series.

It was a brilliant move for Kubota to come up with the Standard Ls, esp when they started offering
HSTs with the L3400/L4400 a few years after the Lxx10s came out.

I could have gotten a BH77 backhoe on my L3240 but it was considered the light duty hoe for that tractor.Same as how the LA514FEL is considered the light duty loader for it.

As for color, I am still using the Kubota 2 orange paint for touch up paint on the New Kioti, and even "close up" it appears to match well:)

James K0UA

Well I guess I'll be an outsider too. :( Another problem, I don't think you have to get too close to tell that my Kubota orange touch up won't mach my JD green.
I'm still willing to help out you orange tractor guys if I can.
