Buying Advice L series, what makes it Grand?

L3800 La524 loader 1131 at the pins.
L3540 La515 loader 1351 at the pins
L3940 La724 loader 1865 at the pins

as you can see, if you jump up to the 3940 then you can have the more powerful La724 loader.

You dont have to buy the 3940 for the 724 fel. I and many others have the 724 on GL 3540's. My decesion to buy the grand L was the cab and the overall specs. I needed a machine that could work on pristine turf all day, provide me with the pto power & fel lift capicity/height i needed and leave the turf without a footprint! It took a long time to narrow down the machine i needed, in the end it was a Gl 3540 hsdc, no regrets!

Just looking over the specs for the new standard L series and grand L series, it looks like at some point Kubota lowered the performance of the new standard L series a little when compared to my old 1999 model. The grand L is slightly better than my old unit.

My old 1999 L3710 HST 4wd
HP 36.6 (4 cyl.)
Pump 7.8 gpm
3 point 24" behind lift points 2310 lbs.
Weight with ROPS 2990 lbs.

New stand L 3800
HP 37.4 (3 cyl.)
Pump 6.3 gpm
3 point 24" behind lift points 1435 lbs.
Weight with ROPS 2668 lbs.

New Grand L 3540
HP 37.0 (3 cyl.)
Pump 8.3 gpm
3 point 24" behind lift points 2650 lbs.
Weight with ROPS 3395 lbs.

The thing that bothers me is the lift capacity of the 3 point on the new L 3800.

Anybody know the loader lift capacity difference on the new L vs grand L?

Kevin

Actually your 3710 is a Grand L. It was replaced with the 3830 grand L that was replaced by the 3940. The standard L models came out as a way to offer higher HP in a lighter framed tractor to complement the grand L line.

The 10 series was the first of the Grand L-series it is not a standard L! The difference is 14 years of history with it and the improvements made in the line. There has been so many changes over the years and continual improvements made in the line.

When was the term Grand first used for the L series tractors? Was there "non Grand" L series tractor with HST in 1999?

The L3240 and the L3540 operate at a lower pressure than a L3940. Even though the LA724 loader is the same it will lift more on the 3940.

Best, Bill

Hm. thats interesting, I wonder if that is why on the website it says figures taken from a 3940 equipped with La724

The only way I found out, was by reading the service manual. To my knowledge that's the only place you will find that info.

The 3940 has taller tires so it says that because it will lift a hair higher.

I am going to throw out this very generalized statement, knowing there are all kinds of holes in it. The Grand L Kubotas are designed and built as small, true utility agricultural tractors. They are built for sustained work in a harsh environment(farming). This is not to say that standard L series could not do real work, they do every day around the globe.

But when you start looking at some of the options available on the Grand Ls, they mean business. Creeper gears, draft control, swinging drawbar, heavier lift capacity, both front and rear, are all things that a professional demands from his working tractor. Does every Farmer need every option? Probably not. But, He may choose at least one because he truly needs it.

The L3240 and the L3540 operate at a lower pressure than a L3940. The LA724 loader will lift more when installed on the 3940 because of the higher pressure.

Sorry, Incorrect!

According my service manual the system pressure for the L3240 all the way through the L5740 is 17.7MPa or 2560psi. The pump capacity is larger on the L3940 (9.8gal/min) over the L3240/L3540 (31.5gal/min).

Pascal's principle will back me up on this; the larger gal/min will do nothing other than increase speed. The system press being the same, the LA724 loader should lift the same weight on all tractors it is mounted on.
