Do doves scare away other birds?

I have 3 cotton tails & 1/2 dozen or more quail out front right now. 1 Of the quail went over & pecked 1 of the rabbits on the nose. At first I though the rabbits were going to mate or play their mating game. 1 Stands still, another runs at it, just as its almost hit it jumps straight up in the air. They sort of take turns at the run & Jump. Have yet to figure out for sure, but I think its 2 males, but not really sure.

May be a pair? I have a few rabbits that do the same thing, ,,,same thing me and the wife did when we where younger:D
Watching the critters is better than TV.

Well, two things. She won't listen to reason. Never has. What was I thinking?

Yes, they are 100% doves and I've got about 20 in the yard (a few acres) and they nest in trees everywhere. Every now and then I see where a hawk or owl grabs one and leaves a pile of feathers in the grass. Yup, doves and nope, won't listen.

She may listen to "I need a new Bellini shot gun!" You know for "bird protection"

Maybe she was refering to..... Chinese Trained Attack Doves......????? Or maybe she had a bad ' dove ' dream as a child... ??? [ :) ] Doves are less mean spirited than milk cows...

I would never even try to milk a dove but.......I'll take your word on it!

They are most probably drones...sent by Homeland Security see what suspicious activity is going on around the bird feeder. It's about time for some of those spy bluebird drones to come up from Venezuela. I would get me some binoculars and look for little missles under their wings.

I have seen young male dove without a mate scare or run another young male dove away from the feeder,, My wife has a feeder and I have a patio with a nice chair and table that I set with a cool beer and watch these birds,, same way with a couple,, the male will run another male without a partner off.. The small birds take flied also.. That maybe what your wife was witness.. Lou

Then on second hand the others may be right.. They maybe a special breed dove called Kamikaze Dove,, known for their suicide dive on poor unsuspended feeders.. They will take out the whole feeder.. I have read where some on here have said they have seen the feathers of dove around the feeder believing that a hawk took them out.. but it wasn’t no hawk my friend,, it was the Kamikaze Dove without any missiles.. Lou

Getting back to real doves & birds.
For the past 2 days I've been watching the quail, doves & cotton tails out the front window. Seems like they may have spring fever, just like I do.
Quail are the real dominate feeder, not in an aggressive way. Just sort of I'm the boss. More like they are playing, just go over to the doves & rabbits and tell them to move. the small birds, come & go as they feel like, right beside the quail or doves and are pretty much ignored. Things will get a little more serious when the quail start bringing in their babies. A mother quail would take on a bear if she had to. One quail pair brought in 3 separate sets of babies last year. Not uncommon for them to bring in 2 broods.

Sure fun to watch. Those are the front yard brats, even more action out back. Too many different kinds of birds to even keep track of.

Have a Falcon (Possibly a small hawk. too fast to really get a good look.) that came by, totally silent, about 6 feet in front of me. Landed in a tree about 10 feet away, no noise. Looked like it was doing some kind of a dance to imitate some other bird. Went to another tree about 50 feet away, same act. Came back by me and did it all over again.

Now and then it nails a dove usually one in a tree, cloud of feathers and the falcon is gone. Now & then it makes a "Strafing" run just to stir the other birds up. Then goes on its way to look for mice or something else.

More later. Have Fun,
Jim

We have a lot of Mourning Doves here. I have never seen them bother any of the other birds at our feeder. The Bluejays and Mockingbirds are the bullies at our bird feeder.

Whoops! Forgot the Cardinals. They are as bad as the Bluejays and Mockingbirds.

When I used to mow hay in Northern New England, some sort of hawk (marsh hawk?) used to grab mice that I kicked up. He would swoop in like silent death and scare the living snot out of me because he was only a few feet away and came up from behind. Huge wingspan and I never got used to it. It seemed like the same bird returned the next year .
