"In the 40 years since the introduction of high-fructose corn syrup as a cost-effective sweetener in the American diet, rates of obesity in the U.S. have skyrocketed"
Princeton University - A sweet problem: Princeton researchers find that high-fructose corn syrup prompts considerably more weight gain
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) consumption is one of the leading causes of obesity. It's in most all processed food products on the market today AND GUESS WHERE IT COMES FROM?
"In the United States, 85% of the corn being grown is genetically modified, and 70% of processed foods contain genetically modified ingredients without labeling them accordingly3. Statistics released by The National Corn Growers Association show that approximately 80% of all corn grown in the U.S. is used to feed livestock, poultry, and fish—both domestic and overseas, and 12% is added to foods that are either consumed directly (such as corn chips) or indirectly (in the form of high fructose corn syrup products such as imitation table syrup)
Given that the average American consumes eight ounces of meat each day on top of a wide array of heavily processed foods, we are unknowingly eating genetically modified corn at astonishing rates. Especially when the corn used in the production of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is genetically modified, which based on the NCGA data, it most certainly is. But without adequate labeling laws in place to inform consumers about ingredients made with GMOs, it is impossible to be certain."
