No, that's welding rod. Actually coat hangers make good welding rods because they have to be a fairly good quality steel to twist and bend like do. ;)

I'd disagree. The metal composition is unknown and at best, poorly controlled, and the coating that is on most hangers will contaminate the weld. If you are going to gas WELD use an RG series rod.

If you like to play with metal, you can pretty much draw freehand with OA & a bare bronze rod, working on a stainless steel plate as a drawing surface. I did a bit of metal "artwork" in my late teens/early 20's for spending money. Even had a live booth at CaroWinds one summer. Heat til it flows & guide with rod & torch. Build depth with add'l passes as needed, do multiple parts & join. Used to do belt buckles with initials & webs, frogs, figures, tree branches & roots for small statues, etc. It made for very organic surfaces, smooth & flowing to wrinkled & puckered depending on how you work the torch.

Of course the RG45 or RG60 are preferred but back when gas welding was more popular, coat hangers came to the rescue for many people. Maybe I shouldn't have said good. Will work in a pinch might have been a better term.
