Tornadoes!

   / Tornadoes! #31
I'm watching the radar over Texas and man there are some nasty storms starting up around Ft. Worth and heading North East. In about ten minutes all heck is going to break out on Lake Texacoma, and I hope no one is out there on a Sunfish.

How does one prepare their homestead for 200mph winds and expect to have anything left? Reinforced concrete block? Steel shutters?
And what kind of roof holds up best to super high winds?
What about all those ag buildings, the barns and storage bins, elevators, etc, etc. I wonder how they make out.
And how about the millions of dollars of expensive machinery in those barns. At least most of them are made to get wet.

The sight of cows and horses getting sucked up would sure spook me for a while.

The Braums house in Tuttle started with the use of a crane and welders welding a steel superstructure. Most folks can't afford that kind of construction.

Thoughts and prayers to all those who are suffering through this tragedy. May they find peace and comfort, if not today, soon.

To those TBN'rs in Oklahoma and other areas hit by this storm, We all pray for your safety. Hope you guys and gals are all safe and back with us soon.

Thanks Scott. Lots of tense moments; the first round on Sunday missed us by about 4 miles. We had some hail damage, loss electricity for about 4 hours; the surge fried my computer, so been out of touch. Am posting this from my Daughter's computer. This same storm went on to Shawnee, Carney. Yesterday again lots of rain, hail. loss of telephone service, (both land line and cell phone) but the big tornado set down about 20 miles South of us. Today just some rain and wind. The devastation is unimaginable. My brother and his two daughters (both teachers) all live in the area of the tornado, but all somehow escaped damage and injury. My Niece's schools all escaped damage and the kids are all OK. Have spent untold hours just watching the events unfold; the TV coverage has been amazing and the videos frightening. See you guys later when I get my computer back on line; but for now we're all OK.

The only way I know to 'survive' these storms is to be well insured. Most people can't afford to build an EF4 or EF5 proof house unless you want to live underground like Sam Walton has done near Sallisaw, OK. The two chances of many of these structures being built in tornado alley are slim and none. Even all-metal frame homes have a hard time marketing their products. The best common marketable technology right now is to withstand an EF2 or EF3 at best. Having hardened rooms inside our homes, underground or above ground shelters, and cellars used for home canned food storage, etc. are economically justifiable. Most people who build a shelter will have no use for it to escape a storm, ever. Making it a multi-purpose structure makes perfect sense.

Dennis, good to hear all is well,,considering. Internet loss is a very fair trade:thumbsup:
My brother's family where hunkered down in Ft Towsen OK. No Tornadoes there, but that was the general direction the storm was headed. My brother was on the road (long haul trucker), nothing worse than being out of town knowing all he77 is breaking loose close to home.

Storm Shelters - Jarrell Storm Shelters
Anyone have one of these. Turn key for 3k seems a fair price.
HS.
My worry with them is that the door appears to open outward:

I would verify that there is a way to remove it from the inside before purchasing one.

Dedicate a bottle jack, tire irons ($30 or so at harbor freight), lumber, problem solved.... and hope they are never needed.
