Rhubarb harvest time

My wife spent yesterday morning harvesting rhubarb at my grandparent's house (they are in their 90's). Got 13 quarts after cleaning. Most of it is in the freezer waiting to be made into pies and strawberry/rhubarb jam. Grandpa loves rhubarb and has been growing it over 70 years. He has trouble eating hard food any more so my wife made him some strawberry/rhubarb jello today and it is good.

I, personally, don't like Rhubarb. My Mother used to make Rhubarb pies - Apple, strawberry, peach, and just plain Rhubarb pies. Dad's tractor didn't have lights, and I once scalped Mom's Rhubarb patch with the Bush Hog. It was getting dark fast and I was bush hogging around the Apple orchard where Mom's Rhubarb patch was located. It came back the next year, but my Mother gave me the Works. I was aroung 10 years old. When I read your thread, it brought back good memories of my Mother.

I think that's one of those things which people had lost interest in, but now it's coming back. My sister works at a farm stand down in a ritzy area on the coast; she says it's something they can't get enough of.

I think it's great that you're able to help your grandfather enjoy something he likes...
then again it's great that he's still around to enjoy things at his age. :thumbsup:

Man Rhubarb pie!! almost all we had when we where kids. We never where allowed to "binge" on it, since granny said it could be toxic if you ate to much, but boy was it good!!

YUCK!!! There ain't enough sugar to make it taste good!!!
I'm a desert guy! During the holidays growing up there was always Rubarb and Minced pie left over. NEVER any of the good ones!

Rhubarb usually needs sugar but as a diabetic that was a problem. I cook it up using Sprite (Coca-cola diet lemonade) for liquid and sweetness and 3 teaspoons of vanilla. I just have the one plant which has survived being moved every time I move house (5 times), Also survived having the spade put through it everytime a friend or relative wanted a plant.

yummy, stuff we have fresh strawberries waiting for some fresh rhubarb. we made one last Friday all gone by Tuesday... It was good with young tender Rhubarb

Made some into Jam a few years ago and it was way good too!

I moved two rhubarb plants last fall, one I split into two, so now I have three plants. They took right off this spring, very healthy looking. Can I harvest some this year, or should I let it rest a season? My wife is a big rhubarb and strawberries fan.
