Shortly after I bought my Mossberg 535 last fall I had my slight 5' tall 65 yr old wife (who hadn't handled a rifle or shotgun before) take it and fire a few rounds (3 1/2", turkey load). This was to be sure she could handle it.

She held tight and blasted where she was aiming. No problem.

I'm sure she got more projectiles on target with each shell than she could have with an AR-15.

I told her if she's using it for defense load 4 turkey rounds and two slugs.

I hope we never have to but I trust my shotgun.

Now a 2 barrel means 2 shots and reload, that's not enough.

I was a shotgun man myself, but this fellow convinced me this weekend that an AR really would be better.

Home Defense: Double Barrel Shotgun vs AR15 - YouTube

He used a double barrel, and my pump would be better. But if there is more than one person and I am all shook up (really very likely,) 30 rounds in a weapon that doesn't kick would be better for follow-up shots. Even the racking action of the pump shotgun could be an issue.

Maintaining and securing a weapon for years, and trotting back and forth to the safe each day...that's a lot of work if in the end, I fail. That's why I want to settle on the right thing, whatever that is, and be done with it. I just want to get right and stay right.

my wife wants to try to fire my new shotgun after it arrives......after watching these..im not sure if:
1. do i want her to try and shoot it
2. Should i be filming it

As long as she is not the type to drop the weapon, it should be fun and interesting!

Hillary is out of the picture. John Kerry took her spot. It was in all the papers!!!
Biden is out there doing his thing. The press has other headlines to work on. Whether Christy will put a Democrat in the open Senate position, storms in the midwest, all that stuff that is more important.

For anybody that cares the shotgun is much more reliable in a self-protection role than a automatic anything. Less collateral damage to other people. You don't have to be spot on with the shotgun. An automatic that shoots a bullet is more likely to miss the target in the dark and penetrate several walls after traveling upward of a mile after shooting too high in a panic situation.

Maybe you would enjoy the Hickock45 video I posted. I used to feel just the same as you, but now I'm a'leaning the other way.

I have never known anyone buying ammunition to not cause damage.

I'm currently loaded with 2 #7 shot, followed by 2 #00 buck. It was my hope that the #7 would do less damage to property and people. I'm no longer sure I have chosen optimally though.

That may well be true ... however firing a high-powered/high-velocity rifle in a crowded urban environment (like an apartment complex ) ain't terribly bright any way ya wanna cut it ...

Yea, if the earthworms dodge the round, some poor slob in China is up next.

In my county, we can't shoot a firearm within 100yds of a dwelling, even our own. I resent the part about "even our own." I likely would not have done what that fellow did. They will go easy on him probably, but he should not get off if it is against the law.

Very interesting and relevant video.

Kind of an eye opener isn't it?..I never thought a whole lot about recoil of shotguns, as I am a large male, and have shot shotguns for years in competition. But for a small framed person, it could make a difference. Not to mention multiple assailants at varying distances.

Here you go. Glaser Safety Slugs. Designed to not over penetrate. There are other options as well. I have never used any of these in .223. I have used them in 38 special. You learn something new every day:) The world of guns and ammunition is a lifetime study subject:D
