Snake #2 ?????
Was sitting out on the deck enjoying a nice cold beer.
Dogs alerted, with there snake noise. Sure enough here is a rattler. Grabbed my 12 year old flash light with it original batteries and there it was. Rattling like crazy & ready to fight. First shovel I saw was a small one, with a short handle, a little less than 4 feet.

Not wanting to get too close I jabbed it as hard as I could. Just made it madder, more jabbing. it's pretty well broken up, still mad and striking the shovel. Took a while but finally got a chance at it head. Mashed it real good.

Snake was a little over 4 feet, took a couple of pictures but they did not turn out. Try again tomorrow.

This is the time of year that rattlers get together & breed. Maybe this was 1/2 of a breeding pair. ????

Way more fun than I really wanted.

Sure glad that my dogs are snake smart. Were standing at a safe distance & once I had him in control they just watched.

Side note: Dogs are immune (to certain extent) to rattle snake poison. But they will get very, very sick & miserable for a couple of weeks.

Thats not immune!!! They swell up like crazy, their heads look like basket balls. My wife works at a vet, this area does not see many rattlesnake bites mostly copperheads and cottonmouths but an occasional rattlesnake.

They are in extreme pain during it. MOst live yes but its still not like a bee sting to them.

That was pretty much what I was trying to say. You just said it better.

Here are a couple of pictures of last nights bad boy. It it had not broken there would have been 11 rattles & a button. They get a new rattle each time they shed, usually 2 or sometimes 3 a year.

Crash, you can keep them "rattle-boys" I know we are supposed to have some here, but I haven't seen any. I don't like the idea of some under the house..You might find one in bed with you some morning.

I'm not much in favor of them under the house either. Better under than in. :D They will come inside, or lay down right outside the door. My sister got bitten by one on her front step. Haven't had one in the barn yet, but know that some day 1 will be there.

Back in the old days when people would sleep outdoors or on the ground it was not uncommon to have one get in a bed. Old Cowboys had lots of stories about that.
