x739 questions

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of downsizing my equipment from heavy duty commercial machinery to an X739, I believe.
I have a couple of questions for those who use this machine or a similar unit.

1. With a 60 inch HC deck, how does it cut? I am coming out of a deere 60 inch front mower and the cut is great but I am not driving over the lawn first before cutting.

2. How does the power flow work for the heavy wet oak leaves? Do I need a supplemental motor like a trac -vac?

3. Has anyone ever seen a way to attach an MC519 cart without the fixed hitch. I like to come close to the shrubs and you cannot turn away from the shrubs with the fixed carts like the MC519 and Cyclone Rake.

4. The 739 seems to come with a pretty heavy tread HDAP tire that looks like it would be great in the snow. How does it perform on turf? Will it be more likely to chew up a softer/shade lawn than a standard turf?

5. Anyone with experience with the "Original Tractor Soft Cab" that is available for this machine? I want to be able to remove the cab each spring and the Curtis like cab is bulky and cumbersome.

6. Finally, I heard the collection system on the Grasshopper Mower is outstanding. Anyone out there with experience with this setup. The reason I ask is that for the same price as the X739 the Grasshopper mower and snowblower seem to be an easy to use setup.

Anyone out there with a HC deck under a 700 series?? How does it mow?
Anyone out there with the all purpose tires? Are they rough on the turf?

1. The 60 inch HC is a clone of the 7-Iron decks, so the performance is the same. The 7-Iron is regarded as one of the best mower decks on the earth, so I wouldn't worry about the HC decks as far as cut quality goes.

2. I have no personal experience with the power flow system. I have only heard from others that it works very well. In fact, a lot of members buy it just to make leaf clean-up easier.

3. No. As far as I know, there is no way. The chute that runs from the deck to the MC519 is designed for an exact length. If the cart did not stay straight with the tractor at all times, it would either damage the cart, or the chute. Especially if you turned sharply to the left, it would rip the chute right out of the MC519 cart.

4. I run turf tires myself on my X740. Again, I have no experiences of my own with HDAP tires. From what I have read and heard, they leave no damage unless you spin out. Of course, with the HDAP tires, there is a far smaller chance you will ever spin out in the first place. Personally, I think HDAP's are the best of both worlds. Traction with a fairly aggressive tread, and no damage to the turf.

5. No experience with any cabs on X7's, and very little knowledge of them. Personally, I would never bother to fight with installing and removing a cab multiple times per year. My opinion is either leave the cab on all the time or do not get one at all.

6. I have no comments for this one at all, as I know absolutely zero about grasshopper products.

My moms x749 has hdap tires and we cut damp hillside all the time. It doesn't do any more damage than the old craftsman we had and as a bonus it is 4x4. It's very stable on the hill even while turning uphill and downhill. We could mow in circles if we wanted.

the HDAP tires can be hard on grass. My X595 has them, and if you make a tight turn (which is very easy and tempting to do with the power steering) the front wheels will tear up the ground. This is particularly true when in 4wd. I read on the JD website that the bigger 700 series with all wheel steering are engineered to have speed compensation built into the front wheel system to avoid scuffing, so if that's what you have, you're in the pink.

1. Don't Know, I have the 54c deck on mine.

3. Not sure what you are asking but besides the standard single whole hitch on the back, JD sells a bolt on cat 1 receiver hitch for the back to be able to switch different stuff out. I am just finishing a custom receiver build for mine. Not really much different than the JD one. I like the idea of quickly switching out hitches and implements on the back like a spreader or sprayer.

4. The tires are great. Yes they will chew up the lawn if it is not thick turf and you turn tight. This is more of a function of the weight of the machine however and I'm not sure the tread is that much more of a factor. I made the mistake one of accidentally stepping on the rear differential lock and that really did some damage. This machine will climb hills "like you read about". I showed my buddy the other day and when right up a 50 degree incline and I didn't spin one tire or the engine never even labored.

Lastly, I looked hard to find a 2012 x749 vs the new machines like the x739 because I wanted the "triple threat", AWD, AWS, And Diesel. I also liked the looks of the older models better, but that's just me. I like the new decks on the 2013s but the machine also sits higher and I like the lower center of gravity on the later models.

If you want a machine to do everything, the 700 series is it. I almost thought about getting rid of my 3520, Then I slapped myself for that thinking.

Thank you all for the input. Here is where I am. I trialled the Grasshopper mower on my yard. A large front mower is just too big and hard to turn in tight places. The build quality is outstanding!!! It has incredible features. Cuts and stripes beautifully.
I am now waiting for my new X739 aws awd gas. I am getting the power flow for the grass and light leaves. When the leaves get heavy, I will switch out the powerflow for the new Cyclone Rake Z-10 I just finished assembling. I bought the 54 inch snowblower. The Original Tractor Cab Company will be making a soft sided cab available this fall for the new 700 series.

I have already ordered the whole machine. I had a commercial 1435 with 7 iron deck. I do expect the cut to be the same except for the fact that the X700 will drive over the lawn first.
I hope there is enough suction on the HC 60 to make the grass stand up nicely so the cut quality will not be compromised.
