Is your coil well grounded to the engine block? Clean shiny metal under the bolts that hold it to the block? If the coil mounting holes are covered with fresh paint then it could be insulated from the block- and the circuit would not be complete.

Good thinking...checking it now.

No luck...Didn't help. I thought you solved it considering that the new coil has a clear coat on the metal.

NEW TEST RESULTS: I went out and re-checked the air gap and tweeked it. Poof - I have a spark! Then I screw in the plugs, try to start it and nothing. I re-check the spark.....GONE!

So when you try to start it does it wet the plug?

Not wet but I even sprayed starting fluid without even a pop.

Kohler service schools always told us if you don't use a good spark tester you run the risk of
burning out the electronics inside the coils. There's a lot of voltage and if it doesn't discharge
properly it will cause damage. I have never replaced a flywheel due to low,weak magnetism.

I FOUND IT !!!!!!!!
I'm surprised that nobody thought of this one: I initialy thought the coil was bad and bought a new one. When that did not fix it I bought a new flywheel...What if the first coil was always good and the flywheel was bad, then you were sent a bad coil? That was it; Put on the old coil with the new flywheel and its a sparkin fool! Started right up first crank.
I even got the retailer to send me a new coil based on all of this talk. THANKS to everybody for their help....Now lets cut some grass!

Hi everybody...I'm new here with a problem that is driving me over the edge. I have a Scag 48" zero turn that is not running. It has always been finicky but now has died with no spark. The engine is an older Kohler magnum 18hp twin cylinder with coil-magneto / flywheel ignition. First I checked the coil with a meter across both both secondary wires and found it completely open. New coil installed...It has a very weak spark that will not bridge any spark plugs

Great, glad you got it fixed. I know briggs will remagnetize a flywheel for free. I dont know about kohler. Might be worth asking.
