Neighbor attacked by Pit Bulls

My former secretary's brother is a plastic surgeon. He said a substantial part of his practice was replacing noses and ears, mostly on children, who had been attacked by dogs.

Just an observation, most children have no clue how to approach a strange dog. Worse yet, you would think parents instill into their kids to NEVER approach a dog without asking permission first. I don't care what kind of dog you have, if you have a child come running up to a dog and surprising it, you're asking for trouble. None of my animals had ever reacted agressive to children doing this, but my wife got embarrassed when I told parents they needed to control their children better around animals (crap, some of the kids surprised ME running up).

Not saying it's always the childs fault if they get bit, but if my dogs were in an urban area contained behind the house by a fence, I'd want camera videotaping everything (some kids can be downright mean).

A long time ago I had a dog, don't know what breed it was but think it had some boxer in it. That dog was great around my kids but one day a couple of young kids that had just moved into the neighborhood walked along our 4' chain link fence with a stick dragging it across the fence making a popping sound as they walked along. They teased him a lot. Our dog hated them kids. He would try to go through the fence to get them whenever he saw them. One day I was at the kitchen sink looking out the window and saw those kids walk by. They were out in the street not even close to our property. That dog climbed the fence to the top and with half his body leaning over the fence barking and snarling at those little kids. All the hair on his back was standing straight up. I knew then that one day he would figure out a way to get one or both of them. I hated to do it but I took that dog out to the farm and put him down. I told my wife I could not live with myself if our dog was to tear up a child no matter what kind of brat they were.

I think the term "pit bull" has become synonymous with fighting dogs. While every pit bull is not aggressive or bread for the fighting rings, those that are make the evening news. The breeds of the dogs involved in the incident are an Indian Mastiff and a Boerboel terrier mix (still not positive about this one). Both of the dogs are aggressive breeds and need to be trained, handled and maintained with special care.

This is a quote from social media and reflects the salient issue here:
"As the daughter of the man who is now laying in the hospital I could give two craps about what kind of dogs they are at this point. If they are an aggressive dog they should have been contained registered with the town and also had all the shots that go along with being a RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNER!"

Note: Because the owners could not provide vaccination records he is undergoing a round of rabies shots.

My only contact with the owner was to apologize for putting her dogs down, explain my position, and give her the opportunity to hear it from me not the media. She was upset at the time, which was to be expected, but did not question or condemn my actions. From what I understand these dogs were a gift from a family member. Don't know how long she has owned the dogs or weather she was the one that trained them, however, their ages were one and two.

As for punishment that is still to be determined. If they had a prior "history" the punishment will be severe. As for being sued I think it is inevitable. Damage has been done, people injured, medical bills have been incurred. My neighbor is still in the hospital and will be for quite some time. They have not been able to close the wounds in his leg and will require plastic surgery, skin grafts, therapy and a lot of aftercare. Insurance companies are not going to step up and offer to take care of the bills, that's assuming that there is homeowners/renters insurance in effect. Just getting this information will require an attorney and they don't work for free.

This is a life changing incident for all parties involved.

That's too bad. Sorry for the loss. My dogs have that "killer" look and actioins until your personally introduced. Since your on "their" turf, it is a trust thing.

You have as many idiots who own guns as you do dogs. Yeah, the dangerous dogs may bite you, but then you also have the idiots who get a dog, never have it altered, then let it roam wherever it wants to go, loses it (the dog) only to get another. Just keeps repeating the process over and over. Heck, I wouldn't have a problem with background checks on ALL dogs LOL

Yes there are idiots with guns I agree and idiots with dogs however the comparison of gun vs dog in this and all cases where someone makes that argument is pure crapolla. To compare a gun to a dog is insane a gun all by itself is not dangerous at all its an inanimate object, where as a dog is a thinking living breathing creature capable on its own to act in anyway it feels like or has been trained to act or has the genetics to be aggressive which this breed is bred for.

Just this morning front page in a local paper we have a child attacked and mauled nearly to death by a pit. Dog jumped a fence where he little kid was in his own yard and mauled him in his face and arms. Police caught it and put it down (good riddance) and this little kid will be changed for life in many many ways no one will know how but it will be profound. Id like to see all the pit lovers on here tell his folks and family how wonderful pits are and so on just sickening.

Oh and I didn't mention this in my earlier post where I said I was bitten by a pit but the 85# pit that bit me twice in the forearm was in my back yard and it took me 7 days of the 10 I had befor starting the rabies treatment to discover the rabies shot status of that dog. Luckily for me he happened to have been vaccinated 2 years prior. The vet said I should be ok and I was but the infection I got in my arm has horrendous I almost ended up on IV antibiotics I dont even like talking about it...

I will go as far as to mention the dog that bit me was supposedly owned by a female gang banger associated with a well known California based gang and she was living in Denver at the time. And the guy that was keeping the dog for her here moved it out of state immediately after he found out it bit someone. The dog has not been seen around here since according to my sources. fwtw

.

I googled both breeds. Both are rare and guard/protection/fighting dogs like you say. Someone would have had to go to some effort to obtain these dogs. I had no idea the owner was a woman and had the dogs given to her (assuming this is true). I think the person who gave her the dogs should be up on the same charges she is going to face.

There's a lot of discussion about pit bulls in this thread. People for and people against. People saying that pit bulls are commonly improperly identified. And there was a picture of one of these dogs. I think it's very telling that nobody said, hey - that isn't a pit bull. So even the people that defend pit bulls by saying 'pit bulls statistics are inflated due to mistaken identifies' can't tell sometimes.
