My first thoughts are what was I doing at 19 ???
OH yea, I was driving around Europe with 3 Secret Security Clearances! I was a Batallion Courier in the US ARMY!

CC Fraud means he will probably do time, they take that seriously! Why would he not disappear if gotten out?
I would consider any plan to help him the equivilent to bending over, if you catch my drift?

FOOD STAMPS!!! You mean I (and every other tax payer) have been paying for him to get high and steal?? Only in America!

And when were you 19? These days, getting into the milatary is pretty difficult. And I figure you had a father and mother in the picture, that alone makes a big difference. I got caught with pot 2x, never charged, the cops just threw it out. Now I'd be arrested, charged with possesion, and have a hard time getting a job or anything else. We boomers had it easy, very easy, compared to kids these days.

We got by with a lot of stuff in the day, but we weren't mass murderers either. Kids nowadays have to be cracked down on hard before they escalate to those things, but that is my opinion.

I would much rather advance him the $225 and let him go his own bail (if that is allowed) and let him be liable if he skips out. I would expect him to act in accordance with his track record and leave you swinging in the wind with the remaining balance on the bail.

I like this idea, if allowed, go that route.

Let me tell you a story that happened to a young man I know. The father had rented from us for years. He was a bad drunk, but the best renter we ever had. He paid his rent ever Friday because he knew he would drink up his pay on the weekend. After a few years his ex-wife and son moved in with him. My mom spent a lot of time with the boy as he was growing up. She always felt sorry for him, being raised so poor.
As he became a teenager, he picked up his dad's bad habits without any of his good ones. He got picked up for underage drinking and possession of less than 20 grams of weed. She wanted to pay his bail. It was about $200. I advised against it, but Mama has a mind of her own. We always have work that needs doing on the farm, so she said she would get him to work the money off that way. So she bailed him out and he helped us take down some old fence. He worked half a day, and that night got arrested for driving with no license, DUI, and possession of weed.
Around here if a kid gets in trouble, the law is on the lookout for them. They will get pulled over all the time. If he had stayed in jail, he would have been better off. As it was, he still had to spend about six months in the county jail. He didn't go to prison, but he got several years of probation.

It sounds like this kid could gain some insight from the county providing him with three hots and a cot.

Go with your gut...if he straightens out he will never forget what you do for him...if he's beyond hope that's all he has...
As for being a "pothead"...it's much better than alcohol or crack etc...and BTW...just because he smokes pot does not mean he will become a crack/ heroin addict...

The mere fact that you only mention pot (and not crack/meth etc.) tells me he is reachable and deserves a chance to prove himself...if you take a chance and he proves to be worthy you will both benefit...if not chalk it up to a lesson learned and a character judgement lesson...JMO...

Don't waste your hard earned money. After 25 years of watching little johns and Jane's come in and out of jail you have better odds of a payback on a roll of the dice. More than likely he has been doing a lot worse than what he was caught for. If he straightens out it will probably be after quite a few jail stays.
