FILLED REAR TIRES ON 3616

Talking about anti freeze reminded me of hearing on the news or reading somewhere not too long ago that manufacturers are supposed to be adding a bitter flavor or something to anti freeze soon if not all ready. It doesn't make it any less toxic, but is supposed to deter animals from drinking it.

Edit: Did a quick search and found this article.

For about $10 you can buy an adapter and put water in your tires with a garden hose. It's best to put a jack or stand under the rear axle so you don't accidentally lose the bead seal when you let all the air out. If you want to pump in something else other than straight water, it gets a little more complicated if you are not set up for it. A hard freeze would be your enemy with straight water.

Air/Liquid Adapter Kit - GEMPLER'S Here is the cheap one, and they work fine.

Thanks for the input Brian.

Did you use Rim Guard? Did you fill the tires yourself? I've seen a couple of do-it-yourself tire fill adapters/kits advertised. Installing Liquid Ballast in Tires | Gempler's Did you use one of these?

Did I use Rim Guard? That's funny. Back then the closest supplier for Rim Guard was going to cost me more for freight than for the $5 gallon they wanted for the stuff. If I remember right, it would have cost me well over $1000 to fill with Rim Guard.

I used water and anti freeze and a hose and funnel with an adaptor that I purchased for $10 at the local Massey dealer. And yes you do need to have the tire supported or there is a good chance that it will come off of the bead. Takes about an hour to do. ;)

Thanks for all the advice Brian.

And Dave, in the interest of not having the rims rust and/or tires freeze, I'll have you guys fill them with Rim Guard one of these days when I can make it up there.

Regards,
Dave

Just tested my 3616 after filling rear tires...impressed...like a different tractor. I bought this tractor many due to its light weight. Tractor used for brush cutting and yard prep. Clearing a couple acres of woods and turning it into lawn. Well 3616 so light I thought I was going to turn the tractor over after hitting a few holes. To pull a box blade a had to put the thing in fwd. To get a full bucket of dirt was work and lots of rear wheel spin. Not now after 40 gals in each rear tire I have a real tractor. This bad boy has got some ***** of it now. Impressive...if you own one of the 16 series tractor and don't have your rear tires filled you are missing a lot out of your tractor. This is the first tractor I have owned that didn't have the tires filled. This is something you can do yourself very easy. Well worth your time and effort

So, what's the procedure for filling your tires with antifreeze, winshield washer Rim Guard, etc.?

And should the tires have a tube for any of them? (Ignore water-only, not interested in that).

Thanks,

First you have to get over people laughing at you when you buy 80 gal of fluid! Jack up tractor, put valve stem @ 12:00, remove valve stem core. I used my 12 volt sprayer pump to pump in the fluid. I had to remove wand end of sprayer and install air chuck with barbed nylon adapter (air chuck thread to barb). I bought a clamp on air fill chuck to stay on the valve stem. You have to remove check valve from air chuck, easy job! Once you have about a third of fluid in tire, stop remove chuck from stem to allow air that has built up from fluid displacing empty space. You will need to "burp" the tire about three times. I filled tire till I was able to get fluid out of valve stem @ 11:00 and 1:00. Reinstall valve core, inflate tire to 10 percent above recommended rate. Sound worse than it is, I bought one of the valve kits that are supposed to release air with the push of a button, took back after going thru three other kits, none would work. Bad threads on all, made in China. lol Total time start to finish 2 hrs. Getting a total different tractor Priceless! I hated this tractor, but now sweet. Bought 2 tractors same time, both now 18 months old one has 132 hrs other 387 guess which one didn't have the tires filled?

Thanks,

If one is using calcium chloride it is mandatory to use tubes. If you are using any water based filler such as antifreeze, I'd still use tubes for rust protection but I tend to keep things (last tractor had for 28 yrs with calcium and just redid them last year). They usually fill tires with no tubes when using Rim Guard. Tubes also come in handy if you keep a tractor long enough and the tires begin to check. I feel they give them a teeny bit more fluid retention integrity if you've loaded the tires with stuff .

Ok, good stuff. If what happens that I want to happen, then I'll get at least one 12 vdc sprayer pump.

Nest dumb question: Where can you get the Rim Guard stuff in south central (i.e. Lincoln county) TN? My read from the Orange Tractor talk articles is that the RG stuff is the best.

Thanks for your patience!!!!
