Gotta admit, I did get a good laugh.... thanks for that ! (Fram is not on the shelf anymore, in Eastern Canada at least. Not sure about US stores).

Fram probably just got tired of the abuse.... I can't imagine that you make much money supplying Walmart, and they have a rep for crushing suppliers, then taking over their businesses, esp. consumer basics.

They're still sold in the stores here in northern NY...I didn't know they even had Walmarts in Canada with the amount of Quebecers we see here. Prices must be significantly higher north of the border in general.

Don't shop there, but not all if us live within 30 minutes of the border.

No matter how cheap it is, not worth driving stateside.

We see a lot of people buying large quantities of eggs, milk and such to take back with them, I've heard that milk is around $8/gallon up north but I don't know how true that is, just stories we're told

Champion Laboratories Inc.

Fram bought Champ Labs. Logos on the bottom of the main page illustrate some of their latest acquisitions.

Smart that they are acknowledging past production issues.

Like many part sectors, 3 or 4 players (max) control most of the market.

All those filters are not made the same. I cut open a Fram Extra Guard and a Mobil 1. The Mobil was built MUCH better with metal end caps, more pleats, etc.. Same OEM does not mean same specs.

Personally, I use Purolater.

I feel the same way. Maybe that is why Walmart stopped carrying them, improved quality!? :)

Fram is still carried at my Walmart.. In fact, they take up about 90% of the shelf space.

Many things are much higher priced here. Combine that with HST (13% in Ontario), and the ever creeping Eco fees (something like 30-50 cents on an oil filter, and, of course, you pay HST on the "Eco" fee), and it does add up. Not going to rant about the escalating taxes, except to say that it gives you pretty true insight into what is actually going on in the Ontario economy, as opposed to the noise coming out of Queen's Park.

Taxes are often even higher in Quebec.

I shop state side when I can. Yes, things like milk, eggs, flour are usually much cheaper. Price delta on standard (non-high perf) car parts is usually ridiculous.

I like Purolater Pure One oil filters. Wally World now carries Purolator here, but only Classic and Synthetic filters. Classic here at WW is priced not far off what Pure One goes for in Upstate NY.

So, you can begin to see why US retailers have been pushing into Canada, and why many Canadians shop stateside. If I had a mid-6figure job in Ottawa, I wouldn't care about Canadian prices, but few of us have won that lottery.

I will pay the high price for Dairy. Our farmers run on a quota system, a huge investment up front, before one cow gets milked.

I have no clue what Wmarts plans are, but Canada is often used as a test market. (Years ago Hyundai set up here first, in part to shake out their logistics and train their organization on N. American retailing, before going into the US market).

If nothing else, Wmart is surely using Purolator in Canada to beat more margin out of Fram in the USA. If Purolator generates good enough data in Canada (price/delivery), they may get a shot at replacing Fram on US shelves.

I have mixed feelings about dairy Will - I have dogs on both sides of that fight, so won't go on further, as I would just be publicly proving I'm crazy (yeah, I know, too late :D).

What I've grown really tired of, is that I can buy a basic car part in Upstate NY that is typically half the price of the exact same part sold in Ontario. The real kicker - many of the parts are actually made in Ontario !

Both my wife and I shop at Farmer's markets whenever we can, it's a little bit we can do to support local Ag. And, I get really p'od when CorporateGovernment (Galen and crew) tries to intefere with these local markets. Milk is a tough one to do, as the court cases have shown in the last few years.

I agree! I love farmers markets. I support them every chance I get, i would rather buy local, than hop on the organic store band wagon.

I have been cutting filters apart since the 70's but I have not cut apart a Fram in the last several years. I chose to continue using the filters I thought were better made.

walmart does not sell fram anymore?

Not up here in Ontario, Canada. They now carry Bosch and Puralator.

Could be like suggested by Dave, to try and squeeze more out of Fram in the USA?!

I am going to try a premium fram on my next truck oil change.

in my local fl stores, fram is MOST of the filter shelf.

they also have stp, ( acdelco, motorcraft and mobile in limited applications.. ie.. just a few filters ) and of course supertech.

as fro the metal endcap thing. .. look back at the info given in the first part of the thread. good reaons why a metal cap may not always be best.

i used to just generically 'think' that all walmart store / house brands would pretty much be th price leaders.. interestingly enough.. they are not always.

for instance.. the stp and ac delco beat the supertech, fram actually being the most expensive ( using my yukon as an example... stp cheapest.. then acdelco, then supertech.. then fram.

kick over to old ford applications.. and the motorcraft fl1a is cheapest.. then the supertech st8a.. then the fram...ph8a

see it elsewhere as well.

pre-made 1g jugs of iced tea. there is a swiss brand cheaper than gv brand. condensed and evap milk. some spanish brand is cheaper than GV. same int he bread isle. some no nam.. but not listed as made for walmart is cheaper per ounce than gv bread. ie. 98 cents for 16 oz vs gv 1.38 for 20oz. dog foods too. for instance. gravy train small and large cans as well as twin pet small and large cans are cheape rthan ole' roy. pedigree, per can is more spendy than ole roy.. but if you buy the pedigree 12c shrinkwrapped pack.. it is 2 cents cheaper than the ole roy 12 can boxed pack.

just some observations... i'm kinda surprised wm stocks items that sell as cheaper than it's house brand.

Walmart here still carries Fram, but there are other brands (Purolator, AC Delco, Motorcraft). If I recall right, Autozone and O'Reily sells Fram filters also. I haven't used Fram for some time. Usually I get Wix, Motorcraft (for the PS diesel) or Purolator). One O'Reily's I go to actually had Wix oil filters for a 3208 Cat diesel!!! Sometimes it comes down to price....if the 'known brands' are available, which ever is the least expensive I get. Fram, usually I don't get that often.....unless I'm really due a oil change and can't get anything else.

I suppose if whom ever is doing the oil change is on a budget, the least expensive is what they will get. Also depends on how they treat their vehicle.....as long as it runs, the don't care or "tune" it.....

Walmarts around here started carrying bosch as well recently... most expensive. I usually get fram ultra (formerly extended guard).

I was thinking it was at mine as well. But i rarely go to walmart anymore. I have noticed that my walmart seems to have a smaller filter selection than i remember, but i do think years ago i remember then downsizing the selection to the main sellers.??

I almost never go to walmart anymore as the wife does mostly. Its just the other way for me and when were in town we just dont go when im with her. She works in the town with the walmart i dont? I get most of my filters at carquest as they sel wix/rebranded filters and tehre less than $3 for the lower line. BUt when in town iusually go to advance and pick up the purolator pureone for sale like 2/$10. If i dont catch that sale i buy the premium carquest filter for about the same price as that. The good filter goes on the TOY every thing else gets usually the lower carquest filter or a purorlator when gotten with an oil change deal at advance. You dont see the prices you did 2 years ago on the oil deals, and when you do they have the store band filter on them instead of the purorlator filter. You use to get them for $15 all day and sometimes for like $13. NOw seems like there up to about $17-20 at cheapest now and the 17 one comes with the store filter, which i use on the older stuff, i just use primo for the TOy as its the newest and i use Mobile1 and go to 6-9k miles on the oil.
