:newhere:JD 310A, My JD cranks over slow, all the electrics are good, I move (wiggle) the controls
for the loader and bucket to take the press. off the hyd. pump & this helps, but if I turn the
steering wheel (all I can) this really helps. I think there is a hyd. press release valve that isn't
working. New to this. Maybe an adjustment somewhere. The guy I got it from did the wiggle
thing whenever he cranked it. Does this cold or hot. I don't have a service man. yet but am
looking. New starter, bat, cables, extra ground leads. Thanks for the help if it comes, if not I'll
post the fix when I find it.......

You mentioned only one battery? The biggest help would be to convert to the double battery setup. Also, what gauge wire are your battery cables? Should be at least "0" if not "00". You should install a ground cable that goes all the way down to the starter mounting bolt. If all electrical components are good with two batteries, it should start. Is there a "T" handle on the top of your hydraulic pump? If so then turn that in all the way when you start. That will help. If you dont have the "T" handlle, one can be added. Also if a large pump, an electric destroke kit can be installed. It is pricey since the endcap on the pump needs to be replaced to install.

Thanks jd110
I'll check for the "T" handle Monday morn. Maybe a "tee" in the hyd. line could be
added and send the fluid back to the res. tank while starting ???????? I believe in
making mods. to anything if it will make things work better. 2 new 3EE bats. &
00 pos. cable & 2 ground cables, am already planning 2 go directly 2 the starter
with welding cable (make yo own & save, & welding cable makes a great bat. cable)

See Ya,
ONYTAY,
(i'll take U in a ride in my chopper (BOL) sometimes........

I have a JD310d with just one battery and it starts great. I doubt it is your hydraulics. You will have a few seconds of cranking before any pressure builds and it would also be the case that a restart immediately after running would be very difficult as the pressure would still be up. I am betting its your starter. If it is the original then it is getting old and tired.

The "tee handle" that jd110 referred to is the manual destroking screw(parts key #6). Hyd pressure trying to build up while attempting to crank engine can cause slow starter rpm's. If battery ground cable hasn't been relocated from battery box to engine block I'd suggest to do so. JD also offered an electric operated destroking valve. RE40463 elect destroking kit ADD 603.89 USD

Jim, you seem to be the man with the answers around here.. Im having a similar issue.. our 410 has factory ground on the frame right by the dual battery box. 2 brand new batteries will start it like a champ sometimes and other times it acts dead and gives that slow crank click. We decided today that we should order new battery cables, but now Im wondering about this welding cable trick. The only other thing I can think of is the starter getting weak

JD tractors with closed center hyd's such a on a 310A have a very long history dating back to the early 1960's of difficult starting due to extra load on starter of hyd pump attempting to build hyd pressure during starting procedure. On the other hand according to Tractordata your 310D has open center hyd's which should have zero affect on your tractors starting capabilities.

Thanks for compliment BUT there are several members of this forum that are more knowledgeable than I am. I agree starter could be dragging due to worn bushings.

Would it be an intermittent though? ThatS what Im having a problem with. I would think it would be consistent with the dragging if it was the starter. I did notice the positive cable smoking when we tried to start it last night so my gut feeling is high resistance. The father in law said we can soak it in a bucket with a couple gallons of Coca Cola... I told him to stop being cheap and spend the 50 bucks on welding cable and lugs

Yrs back JD introduced a starter relay kit to help alleviate the intermittent starter engagement that you referred to. The kit provides starter solenoid activation wire with more volts when engaging starter.
