The end gap and groove tolerances should be the same with the extra ring - like bob said, the top one is usually different and the lower ones are the same. Since you have new pistons and rings, the side clearances should be OEM correct - they don't usually expect you to have a lathe to re-cut ring grooves. (grin)

That's a cute little ring filer, Bob. And here all these years I've just been filing them by hand using a wooden bench pin and a diamond file. I'll probably do it that way again if I ever have to (hope not), since our local NAPA store isn't going to have one and I'm too cheap to buy one for just one job. Heck, I still file my saw chains by hand, too. Us poor folks gots us some poor ways, but we do get by.

What I meant was, usually the NAPA machine shops will file & fit the rings for you. :)

well i feel better now I just got off the phone with george at keno tractor and he told me he just finnished building a y385 and the rings do not have a up or down side, so i wont have to go take all my rings back out to re-check them hahah and bob in the y85 book it says that .2mm to.4mm is the range the end gap can be so as you posted earlyer the .02in gap would be too large, .2mm is .00787in and .4mm is .0157in to me these end gaps sound very small for a diesel motor but if thats what it calls for then thats how im gonna build it , ill post some pics later today

well when it rains it pours hahaha< I did some measurements on the sleeves today and the ring gap on cyl 1 and 2 were .305mm or .012in on the bottom and .254mm or .010in on the top of both sleeves, that is within spec so that was good, but sleeve from cyl 3 was in such rough shape i couldnt hone the ugly out of it so im gonna have to get a new one, it kinda looked like the sleeve was ate up from water or some fluid left on the cyl for some time it also looked like the po would turn the motor over a little and let it sit for a few months at a time and it would let the fluid work on the sides of the sleeve in diff spots, ill add pics of it, also i think a toothless redneck from the foothills of ky with a tool bag with nothing more then a hammer a screwdriver and a cresent wrench in it worked on this tractor before i got it, or maby this is how they come from china you guys will have to tell me if this is just normal for what you see when you open one of these up, and if its workable, I found a scrape on the jurnal for cyl one it looks like someone hit it with a screwdriver, i cant really feel it but i can see it, i ran my fingernail over it and couldnt feel it, ive added a pic of it and also between cyl 1 and 2 there is a spot on the block, right next to the sleeve were it looks like some moron took a chisel to get the sleeve out, I also added a pic of this, is this normal chinese workmanship or did bubba with a six pack of bush beer get in here before me

You think you're having a bad day? These engines cost about 10 large per cylinder to rebuild. We have sixteen.

Okay, Bob wins the Bad Day prize. (grin)

Yeah, that looks like the one cylinder liner had water in it for a while just sitting there. I'd replace it for sure, otherwise you're bound to chip a ring on it. I'd guess that happened after he overheated it and blew the head gasket.

I wouldn't sweat that little scratch on the con rod journal if it was mine, but then I'm cheap. Lazy, too.

I would expect diesel engine ring end gaps to be smaller than on a gas engine, as these diesels run cooler so less thermal expansion. Ten or fifteen thou would be enough, I think. But then, I'm not a certified mechanic like Bob Rooks - I'd listen to what he says and ignore me, if I was you. (grin)

Just glad it didn't happen on my watch.

The more educated and experienced I become, the more obscure the line becomes between black and white, and more ideas that seemed so, are no longer carved in stone. Just sayin'.
