Might work in South Dakota...depends on who the unlucky "ne'er do well" is or who he is related to.
South Carolina... on the other hand, might have a few more questions.

I would go the cable/lighting route as the primary, with the large bore as the secondary....er uh... don't forget the throwaway, unregistered backup.

I do not know of a chanin or cable that will withstand an OA torch or abrasive cutter.. if the cheain was made by man.. it can be seperated by man.. given enough time. look at firemens tools and industrial tools. abrasive blades.. silicon carbide based.. .. etc. that cuts just about anything.. cable or rope. same with OA... you can 'cut' concrete with OA torches... a big set of demo torches can cut Ibeam like butter....

Technology has made this stuff easier for grab n go artists. 18 and 20+ v bat powered abrasive blade cutters are quiet and carried ina small duffle or backpack and have enough power to cut everel high grade chans or lock hasps or 1" steel cables. i saw a demo of a abrasive saw cutting a 1" dragline steel cable. the demo didn't last long.. at all... less than a minute... add to that that pony torches can be carried in a caddy the size of a large backpack.. Most things yeild to an OA torch.... given time...

pay your insurance. put the equipment in a palce it is inconvienient or risky for the perp.. etc.

odd schemes like taking tires off and such just mean the perp will case your area a couple times, then bring a rollback.. and then drive off with your stuff.

The secret for security is to delay them beyond the point that it's worth their effort, or expose them to the point they are uncomfortable taking the risk. Nothing is going to stop a dedicated thief, but most are just out for a quick score that they can sell for drugs. A good chain and high quality lock go a long ways in deterring them, but never underestimate the creativity of a crack head. Night lights are their worse enemy, as are dogs and alarms. Motion sensors are alright, but not overly reliable. A light on all night long is one of the best ways to keep thieves away.

dogs, motion lights, video recording, cables are all nice.... most of the neighbors here put up gates across driveway after a rash of robberies. We have dogs that bark at noises and will be putting up gates soon.

What are you trying to secure?

No chain or cable is uncuttable if a thief has time. Battery or gas grinders and abrasive chop saws can cut anything. Some hardened chains are bolt cutter resistant but they are no match for an abrasive cutter or torch

Best thing is to remove the batteries, hidden switches, change the ignition switch to a unique keyed one etc etc.

And keep your insurance up to date. Nothing will stop a determined thief with time.

Lojack has many thieves thinking twice. If they do not have a place to unload it right away.A pipeline company used them on the towable air compressors. Word gets around pretty quick.

That reminds me: I forget now where I read about it, here or someplace else, guy kept having his rotary cutters stolen. Stored them in his barn, behind his barn, nothing worked, all walked off. Finally he ended up taking his new replacement up on the hill above his house and painting camo all over it and left it setting in the treeline. Never had a problem after that. Plain sight if ya knew what to look for, well hidden to those that didn't.

Large dog. We have a half hound/lab. Could have named her Cujo. She barks so loud and lunges at people who come over, some people are afraid to come here. Sweet dog with us just does not like it when people show up. Fine by me. But a dog can scare people off with all the noise and the threat of being bit.

Nowadays u get suited for that stuff if dog bites.

A guy got busted here with a bobcat that had lojack. When they busted him, they found a lot of stolen stuff, he was operating a construction company with stolen equipment. I still see welders and gensets suspended from cranes on jobsites.

yep.. grinder or torch wins on most things...
