I know a little about cable tie and related mounts. The company I work for manufactures high end versions of cable ties among other things. Not however the common white or black ones found on most commercial products. Equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars use zip ties routinely as they are the best solution considering design/producibility/operation and safety. In some cases where they are used, the failure of the system could be catastrophic and maybe cause serious injury or death.
Here are a few pics of some nice cable tie work done by one of our customers.

one of the things I learned by this silly thread and reading things is that by leaving the "lump" out where you can get to it, nicely cut off flush of course, one can take off the zip tie by crushing the mechanism with a heavy pliers. Therefore no sharp edges near high voltage. Never knew you could do that.

Interesting with the exposed bus bars on the door with the circuit breakers (?). Looks like some relatively heavy DC (?) judging by the cable. Aviation related?

Actually this is offshore platform related. Got other pics from various projects but I didn't want to overdo it here... I might single handedly keep this thread going past its usefulness :ashamed: I am of course a believer in cable ties but there is a place for them and there is also wrong places for them. Most of us are used to cheap ties but there are some exotic ties out there and slick ways to secure systems using them.

That's a OEM tie for wiring... not a Wal-Mart variety WHITE plastic zip tie that will fail in 4 years from UV exposure. Apples and oranges. :stirthepot:

Plus it's simply keeping the wires and hoses together... virtually no load... it's not SECURING the hoses and cable to the car.

If that would have been on a Ford I bet I would have got a different reply.

How do you know that the cable ties Kubota uses are not some super-duper UV resistant ties?

Tractor is in the dark, no sunlight (UV rays). Tractor is out of the garage and hood is closed and no UV rays in engine area. Pull tractor in the garage and raise hood and still no UV rays. Pull tractor out of the garage, rais ehood and instantly all white zip ties are destroyed and start crumbling. OK, so they don't crumble instantly from that one shot of UV rays that keeps coming up, how long before the aforementioned covered hood down tractor loses all white ties?
Now speaking of white ties, I have some strings of solar lights on my porch rails and they are held on with a few white ties in the direct sun to charge solar panel and seem to be showing no isgns of deterioration after many months. What's going on with that? Could they be UV resistant white ties? I also don't have the tool to cut the ends off and they are just hanging and so far no one has complained about my quality standards but maybe they are telling everyone else and not me.
Some of you guys crack me up. I to can't let this go but I give it a few pages before saying the same thing again and again and again, that covers me for at least 3 more pages unless some one givs me some answers or questions to my post.:cool2: :cool2: :cool2: :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

In the OP picture, I'd say many people are reacting to the perceived cheapness and visual distraction of the white ties, and how their installation was left.

Lacking exotic zip tie installation guns (I've used them at work, but don't own one), you can properly install any zip tie by tensioning with pliers (I like long nose), then trimming the tail with a good quality flush cutting plier. Cut tails that are left long are usually found when you try to slide your hand past them; this type of plastic is stupid sharp when cut - I'd sooner have the original tail left on, like you did John T, than a sloppy cut done.

Buying quality UV black zip ties is a short cut to getting good quality ties, that are test rated for xy pounds load. There may be other quality flavours out there, but they are not easy to find today. One of the reasons the UV black were developed was for outdoor overhead line work - yes, if they can survive that level of UV, they are overkill (in the UV respect) for many personal apps, but I'm OK with that.

To filter out the junk made in Asia, I only buy made in USA (will take Canada too, just haven't found any yet) UV black zip ties. Even on my present budget, I don't mind paying for that level of consistency.

The 2000 multi coloured ties in a tube have their place - If I was heading to help setup snow fence at a volunteer event, I'd grab a tube of those - they only have to last a weekend or so. Amongst those 2000 there may be some OK quality ties, but I'm not interested in testing to find out..... I'd sooner just pay the premium for the good ones.

This is a bit like debating gear hose clamps.... some folks want cheap, other folks gladly pay for full stainless. As long as your stuff hangs together the way you want, it's all good :thumbsup:
