Not a bandaid nor lazy.

There are many times you need to secure cables and there is nothing there to secure them to besides another bundle.

The best solution is a cable tie.

Lots of manufacturers use cable ties in some form. That includes toyota and Lexus. What do you think keeps those big fat looms of wire in place? Pixie dust?

Wrong... The looms are secured with clips that lock into holes in the body, etc. trust me I know. Most manufactures don't have time to fumble around with zip ties. Line speed and part count is just too high. Plus install can have quality issues (not tight, too tight, missing, not cut, etc)

Zip ties are a fine solution on custom equipment, etc. if done properly. But on mass produced machinery there's much better option out there. And that's why Kubota shouldn't use them!

I dont get the big deal on cable ties. Ive installed literally thousands of them. A great product. My BX has white ones too. And their tails are the same length as everybody eases here and cut square, to me that means it's "by design" and done by machine. They arent near as sharp as ones hand cut with regular diagonal pliers which can be a pain, I agree. My only issue with what Kubota has done is use the white ones. Generally they are not UV resistant and besides that, they stand out like a sore thumb.

I still dont get all the ranting in this thread, they're only cable ties:rolleyes: In this case (securing loom) they are the best, least complicated and least expensive solution.

Correct, there are mostly mounting holes with "permanent" ties , however the part that actually wraps around the wire is a Cable tie of sorts. As I said "Lots of manufacturers use cable ties in some form". There are also lots of traditional, single use cable ties found in autos too.

I dont agree that "Kubota shouldn't use them!". Look at a tractor engine compartment and compare it to the engine compartment of a car. There are lots of places where you can use a mounted tie in a car (wheel wells, rad supports, firewalls etc..) and run the wires to suit, a tractor doesnt have a completely enclosed engine bay on which to mount a permanent tie meaning that looms have to be self supporting or bundled together in free air with cable ties for support and chafing resistance.

Is that a cable tie of sorts? On a car? Shocking!!! Obviously Pointiac knows not what they do ;)

PapaPerk wants things done right the first time. He clearly has worked on industrial machinery where zip ties would be laughed at unless they were metal. The operating environment is too harsh for anything else, heat, chemicals, whatever. Applying "industrial" practices in a mass produced
product would make sense if it saved the builder money. Otherwise, are they building for the length of the warranty, five years, fifty years?
I've worked on the fifty year stuff, most of us have. Now I know the John Deere B I grew up with did not have plastic ties. Maybe they weren't invented then... and the wiring ran through metal conduits and little "fingers" or a fabric loom.

When a plastic tie is used in a moderate environment where its failure would not damage anything, then fine with me. Sort of like using duct tape on HVAC work. Yeah, you can weld every joint, but do you need to?...
But if it's "mission critical" or involves high amperage or flammable liquids, particularly if they are unavoidably near an exhaust
manifold, for example, well NO. That's what good engineering should provide for, and the bean counters have to stay away. Having owned a boat,
I am very sensitive to chafing gear. On machinery too, all that wiring running next to things. Is it vibrating? Hot?
Like all things, it's about using the right tool. Maybe not the best tool, but for a corporate entity making huge amounts of machinery,
using an adequate long life solution that saves money is likely good business practice.

Lastly, does SAE or some governing body make recommendations about the use of these in industrial practices or I suppose any practice at all?

With the right spec plastic, there is probably little you can't do with a zip tie.

That's a OEM tie for wiring... not a Wal-Mart variety WHITE plastic zip tie that will fail in 4 years from UV exposure. Apples and oranges. :stirthepot:

Plus it's simply keeping the wires and hoses together... virtually no load... it's not SECURING the hoses and cable to the car.

Yeah seriously.... guess that's why there's so many new Pontiacs at the dealerships these days. :D:laughing:
