Can I tow my Case 580D w a 1-ton pkup, and what trailer would I need?

We used an F550 to haul a 12,000 lb tractor on a triple axle gooseneck. Truck handled the load with ease even though it was near its rated GCWR. The trailer on the other hand did not. Broken rims, broken axle, ripped out anchor point, blown sidewalls, etc... Brakes and bearings had to rebuilt or replaced every year. Had the trailer push me through an intersection in the rain, plus a couple of close calls due to marginal braking. Class A required.

Replaced it with a 4400 IH, and a 20t tag. Class AZ required.

not even close to a farm implement? that's a subjective statement methinks.

my 450 drw and gn trailer and TLB travel between my 2 farm properties all the time. have even taken it a couple cities north to help dig out a fence line for a buddy.

I cant imagine anyone pulling a backhoe behind a pickup not being pulled over for CDL check. Its not even close to a farm implement especially running in the middle of town.

in my neck of the woods you'd need CDL regardless of 26K rules due to the commercial nature of the equipment being towed.

as to the OP question. a properly equipped 20K GN is what youll need and should be within limits of most 1 ton dualies

clearly a tractor with add-on implements. not far fetched to think this belongs on a farm.

is clearly a piece of equipment marketed toward the commercial construction industry.

I am glad you are looking into the truck requirements you will need. Just remember to get the right power unit that will be safe for you and the public. Good luck.
Hi,

Thank you in advance if any of you have an answer to my dilemma...

I need to be able to drive my Case 580D backhoe around to various demolition sites all over the place. I cannot get a straight answer from any living human at a dealer, because they all want to sell me something.

The Case 580D weighs 13,500#, and I have a 300# ditch witch that needs to run w the hoe, so let's call it a 14,000# load. Many guys around here in WV have claimed that they have moved this type of equipment with a dully 1-ton truck and an appropriate trailer, but again, no straight answers.
I know that I am limited to 26,000# without a CDL, and that is what I'm trying to avoid because of the various costs involved once I need a CDL.

So it all breaks down to this: what is the minimum truck and trailer combo I need to haul this rig all over the country if need be, regardless of whether it is a 1-ton truck or not. If I absolutely need to go get my CDL, I will, but for the jobs I have, I don't need it to run the equipment, and the insurance costs are a totally different animal if I can keep it under the weight limit.

Again, thank you in advance for any worthwhile answers you may proffer...

I can tell you 580's are one of the most popular TLB in my area. Way more common to see a 580 variant on a farm than any other tractor hoe combo.

just saying.

very, very usefull tool. We have one at work ( road construction ).. and it's the prime reason why i HAD to get a hoe on my farm... way too usefull when you need one, after playing on one.

My old 1955 tractor with light duty loader and woods 6500 he is no match for a 580 .. but I'm an old tractor guy.. :)

I can't believe someone would think a backhoe does not belong on a farm, every row crop and cattle farmer in this country has one whether it is a case, new holland, or John Deere! We use ours every day. All the tractor dealerships in this area sells any one of the said three above, WOW! LUTT

all the horse and cattle farmers here have hoe's It's the easiest way to bury a large animal when you have one go down.

If I saw a 580 or similar how on a flatbed going down the road in my area, and there were no DOT numbers on the truck.. i would NOT think unlicensed commercial construction guy.. but rather farmer.

On the other hand.. when I see a 16' trailer with expanded metal flooring and 3 weed eaters, a backpack blower, and a ZTR on it pulled by a pickup truck and no DOT numbers. I DO immediately think unlicensed / commercial landscaper / lawn servie guy

:)

those ar ethe ones I WISH dot would stop. I see overloade dand unsafe trailers all the time. and the ones with skid loaders are the worst.. trailer barely good enough for a lawnmowe hauling a skid steer, and load of mulch.. weaving and bouncing all over the road. no lamps or tag.

those are the problem people..

From the CK all the way up to the L models can be found on farms here. Usually they are the older ones that don't command as much money. But a lot of older construction equipment makes it's way to farms. What would be hard to explain would be why you were parked in front of a construction site unloading a backhoe with farm tags on your truck and/ or trailer.

a local hay field has an old michigan pay-loader with the bucket cutout and skeletonized into forks for loading hay rolls and squares. old thing.. looks funny. no fops probably somethig like a 75a pug nose and all.. :)

I have a 580 case hoe and it's only purpose is farm use. I bought it use from a local construction company that was hit hard by this wonderful economy. We use it for just about anything you can think of, but to soundguys point, it has buried 7 cows for different neighbors this year.

I have both a 250 & 450 and either will haul it just fine and neither have DOT numbers. When we need to move it, it will go on either the 25ft or the 40ft trailer put by which truck is available at the time. To be honest with you, I don't give much thought to it.

I have had CDL since I was 20 (well back them they were class 5), my son (23) doesn't, but he will put that 40ft trailer anywhere he wants it and then back it out in needed. Around here farm boys learn early and practice often, but I'm sure a lot of things we do around here would give most of you a heartache. That probably comes from being a south GA farm boy.
