hey. its gear transmission...

I'd probably try and stick with something a bit less combustible like kero or diesel, but honestly I'd say whatever works, the key is getting it all out.

mineral spirits isn't a long throw from kerosene..

depending on the sump.. i'd pressure wash it out.. then add in diesel and atf fluid and alcohol.. agitate.. let drain.. then fill with oil and go.

that's what i do with my new-to-me tractors..

The parts washer fluids I used were sold by Safety Kleen Corp. and they could be used on any car part for cleaning. You could do a pressure wash with this type of solvent, and then use diesel or kerosene as a follow-up to make sure the sludge was completely removed. then use the recommended fluid for the gearbox.
I would be concerned about any pressure washing that introduced water into the box; solvents only, IMHO.

Guys thanks for the responses. I have taken apart the whole sump and identified 2 or 3 possible issues that someone might be able to identify as being an issue... i'm going to post that on a new thread. And thanks again..

any idea of a good ratio for the magic?

Every sump i've pulled apart i've pressure washed if it had gunk in it.

are you afraid of water? water is VERY EASY to remove.. just have to apply some JR high school level chemistry.

no reason to sacrifice good cleaning fearing a lil h20

ps.. ont he parts washer solvent. if it is soap based. THAT i would be concerned about. it breaks down oils.. if you don't get 100% of it out.. and put the oil in on top of soap residue.. what do yuo think will happen?

what would that chemistry in practice be?

after pressure washing.. then doing a rinse with some diesel, atf and 90% rubbing alcohol... i already posted this recipie before.. but here goes afgain

alcohol is a polar solvent. water is polar.. that means alcohol will disolve water and make a soloution, not a suspension, witht he diesel and atf. In fact. the water and alcohol actually from an azeotrope.. and that will flash off faster than either constituant alone.. thus making it even easier to get rid of by working.

since the water is no no longer in a glob on the bottom of the sump, that means you can also simply DRAIN it out when you drain the flush.

the diesel is a good petro solvent.. so any emulsified oil / water on the walls of the sump will be washed off.

the atf has plenty of detergents in it to suspend gunk.. all this leads to a good flush, and when you draint he flush oil you get the suspended and disolved contaminates. the small amount of water inthe azeotrope leftover int he film of thinned oil inside the sump will quickly flash whent he machine is used and brought up to temp.
