Picked up a 1970 GMC C3500 dump truck that needs some TLC

I have a 94 K1500 Sub, 350 TBI, HEI ignition, there is a module that lives in the base of the distributor, can't think of the name of it off the top of my head. When I purchased the truck from the PO, there was a new one in the glove box. I asked him "What's up with the module in the glove box". He said, known point of failure, bad module, no engine. I have since used that one and have a new one in the glovebox, not very hard to change, remove cap, rotor etc down to base. Remove two module screws and carefully unplug, going from memory I think you put a bit of paste on the contact surface. I have the box at home with the part number on it, I can post it later if that helps. Not sure if this is applicable to your engine, I think it is just the "ignition module" should be around $25.00.

My .02,
Dave

That sounds like a fail point on the 454 HEI systems too but it is UNDER the base of the distributor which has to be pulled to replace. Yes the drive gear has to be removed too. :( It is good on the 350 they are easy to replace. The paste stuff acts as a heat sink perhaps.

I have replaced that very module on dozens of GM based 350 and 454 marine engines.

After I replaced the 454 pick up coil one year later it started doing the VERY same thing. On frozen ground we replaced the fuel filter on the MH and it fixed it that time.
Dad always said it will be a lack of fuel or spark if a good gas engine will not start and run right. :D

So I did the timing light test, nothing.

I did pick up the ignition control module you guys are talking about and replaced it. Still nothing..

Does the coil have 12 volt going in?

Did you remove the rotor button and check under it to see if it was jumping through at the center? I can't tell what that orange is in the center.
When the HEI came out GM had to go up 1 MM on the spark plug wires because it was much hotter than any other stock ignition system at the time!

Yes it does. I'll double check with the cover off, but there is 12V coming off the relay I added.

I did. I see no evidence that it has been jumping through. I'll probably pull the whole distributor and look it over.

Paul did you install the ground strap on the coil? Can you provide a pic of the coil with cover off top view?
