Is there anything I can spray on equipment to prevent winter rust?

That cheap spray paint going to cost you a lot less than the overpriced Fluid Film in the idiot rattle can, and work just about as good. Only thing the paint don't do is wick into the metal cause it drys too fast.

People who know what they're doing with fluid film brush it on and buy it in gallon cans. You use a lot less, get the job done, and save money.

Moot point, as we're not talking at an industrial/commercial level here. I don't have a percentage, but probably wouldn't be far off by venturing that heavy metals barely represent a microfraction in a quart of used lubicrant.

moot maybee for you.

we drink ground water where i live. IE.. wells. if I hav ethe choice of NOT putting heavy metals in the ground. or putting a small amount in.. i'll opt for NONE every time.

remember. nothing disappears. it just builds up.

a drop in a field is not much. do a few over lotsa years and you might have a superfud site eventually.

in my county.. when they pull a soil sample for a perk test. if pestacides, arsenic or petroleum, or coliforms come up.. they make you choose a different site to drill.

just hope the shovel full the inspector grabs isn't the one that cleaned off your chissle pont and then laid there to be dug up.

Another fan of fluid film. I spray my plow in the spring before I put it away, I spray my all my mower decks in the fall as well as under coat my truck with it. Works good on battery terminals and I even treat my leather work boots with it. I know I sound like an infomercial but the stuff works. I buy it by the gallon and also always keep a rattle can for smaller jobs. I will never be with out Fluid Film. I buy mine from Kellsport Products. They run specials a couple times a year with 10% off and free shipping. I stock up then. If you're just getting started with Fluid Film their undercoating kits are a really value. I've got both their regular undercoating gun and their newer adjustable undercoating gun which both use compressed air. The newer adjustable gun can accept extension wands which work well when you're spraying into all the nooks in a truck frame.

That's exactly how I use it on fertilizer spreaders.
Back to the original question regarding ground equipment, I know FF works on the bare metal surfaces too. But I keep a lookout for cheap spray paint. Either on closeout or just on sale. The cheap paint has little pigment, but I don't care about that. I don't care about the color either. It still provides a protective covering, and it works great on plow shares, etc. It's also nice to have a clean and dry surface once the paint dries, compared to the grease or oil, especially when you go to work on it or adjust it.

I often see spray cans in clear with no paint pigment to worry about overspray. Clear is paint with no pigment isn't it? That would also be an option and no overspray.

I'm not an enviro-freak or tree hugger but if there is something that I can use that doesn't have runoff into my drinking water, it's an easy answer.

I personally can't attest to the quality, but it is something I've been reading on and seems like it might be worth a shot at the right price.

Don't use lacquer outdoors. It will be gone in a jiffy.

i'm pretty sure that most of here know that lacquer,, as is being discussed here.. is the solvated acrylic thermoplastic, or generically the 'clear coat' urethane.. and not shellac. guess it had to be said however...
