Yanmar 195D
Just purchased a 1979 195D last month. I was told it was a 79, but I have no idea how to verify that and really it doesn't matter to me what year it is. It is in really good shape if it is in fact that old. I do however at some point want to repaint it. Does anyone know where or have a number code to match the "lime green" paint on it? I've already visited Hoyetractor, they are out of stock on the paint. I'm wanting the hood and fender paint, not the frame. I understand this is a "grey" market tractor, whatever that means? I'm happy with it, and the price I paid, I think it was well worth it. It seems to be a little work horse for no bigger than it is. Also any you guys know where I might luck onto any attachments for it? I was wondering about a front loader, it came with a 60" finish mower. Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard - you will love your tractor. That is not a grey market tractor - yours was sold by Yanmar US for the USA market - You can tell by the three digit numbers. Gray markets usually are four - like my YM2020D. The D stand for 4wd. Attachments - any dealer can get you what you want in the form of attachments and better yet is craigslist. A great website is Anything attachments to get smart on attachments. I am pretty sure Koyker builds a FEL for your tractor and Coldwater (a sponsor on this site) also makes one or can. No idea where to get the paint except ask your local yanmar dealer - since yours is a domestic model you will have access to that dealer network.

Here is an article on what a gray market tractor is in case you want to know: Part 1 - What is Zen Noh - ZEN-NOH and Kubota Part 1: A Partnership | OrangeTractorTalks

Also here is a cut and paste from a file I keep on the tractor specs - it doesn't paste very well - but you can see that it was made between 78-80.

Welcome!

Here's the original showroom brochure for your YM195D.

And I think you have the final year version, 1981, because your external air cleaner was only used on the final update.

Paint it??? That's the cleanest one I've seen. Most US Yanmars look more like my sig, below. I tried to get a VN refurb shop to go over my YM240 and they told me it was too rough, they wouldn't do it. It runs like new so I guess that's all that matters.

Gee they're not wrong when they say a 1500 and the 195 are close cousins. i don't think i have really looked closely at a 195 until now.

The paint looks pretty good on your 195D!

I recently repainted my 1500D. The paint on mine was in good shape overall (especially considering the age of the tractor), but my front rims had very little paint left on them. That is where I started the repainting. It 'snowballed' from there to every other body panel and the rear wheels. I ultimately ended up with a complete tractor repainting. All green parts were sandblasted and painted while most black parts were just cleaned and painted.

I went to one of my local auto/industrial paint stores and had the paint custom mixed to match a bit of what was left on one of the front rims, as that was the easiest part to carry in. I went with an industrial coating over an automotive paint because it was a good bit cheaper. I had only a quart mixed at a time but used nearly a whole gallon by the time the tractor was finished.

The shop selected a PPG brand Commercial Performance Coatings (CPC) Green and tweaked the color additives/pigments to get a final color to very closely match the original Yanmar Green. The PPG CPC breakdown/formula was as follows (for one quart):

Formula Name: GREEN
Resin: ALK-200 FULL GLOSS (Acrylic Modified Alkyd Enamel)

HD-10-GRN 5.05g (4.05g base + 1.0g additional to tweak the 'base green' for the Yanmar Green)
HP-10-YEL 202.43g (186.43g base + 16.0g additional)
HW-10-WHI 27.88g (25.88g base + 2.0g additional)
HI-10-ORN 12.93g
ALK-200 FULL GLOSS in the remaining amount to make the quart

This paint is thin and ready to spray. It is also very potent and requires good ventilation and/or respiratory protection. The cost averaged $16.47 per quart (including MS sales tax).

Hope that this summary helps if you wish to proceed in a similar manner.

Re: Yanmar Green Paint

Thanks for posting that! I've never seen a formula for the green paint before.

Re: Yanmar Green Paint

I'm not going to say that it is an exact match to the original Yanmar Green, but it is real close. Some Yanmar Green tractors seem to be a tad bit darker than others in some of the pictures that I have seen (but then again, a little fading could be expected on a 34-38 year old tractor!). The formula listed above was what matched the original paint that was left on one of my front rims.

the VN refrbs have a green paint that is darker than the OE i beleive. I have a VN refurb and in places i can see the original through the chips of the new paint, i think its darker than the original, there is thousands of VN tractors here now so there is no telling what you see when??

I just saw a KIA in town that looked like an exact match to the Yanmar green. Auto paint store could match that.
I saw a Kia yesterday, a tiny one, and it seemed to me that was the same tint of green but metallic and it had more gray blended also.

Kawasaki motorcycles a few years ago used a close match too. But not quite perfect.

What about the new small Fords - Focus etc. I've only seen ads but those looked even closer. And old Mopar muscle cars were the closest match I've seen.

But I've never seen a match that I thought was exactly right.

Added - after a little Googling:
Maybe Yanmar chose that color to cause a subconscious link to the big GM-Terex earthmovers of that era ... :D
